rib pain after bear hug

My son gave me a bear hug about 2 hours ago.  He doesn't realize how strong he is & when he hugged me, I told him to stop because it was making my ribs hurt.
Now I've noticed some pain in my rib area (back) at the lowest part of the rib cage.  It hurts when I press on it (even lightly), when I twist, lean forward or reach for something.
Is this something I need to worry about or just a simple bruising?
Oh by the way I'm 51 yrs old.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi there!

Well, without a detailed clinical evaluation it would be difficult to determine the cause of your symptoms. Possibilities that may need to be considered include rib dislocations, injuries to muscles/ tendons/ ligaments, inflammation, costochondritis, neuro-muscular causes etc. I would suggest resting for a few days. Warm compresses and tylenol/ OCT NSAIDS may be helpful for pain relief. If the symptoms do not seem to improve over a few days, I would suggest seeing a primary care physician or an orthopedician for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.
Hope this is helpful.

Take care!

Couldn't take the pain any more.  Went to the ER.  Diagnosis - bruised ribs; which apparently hurt just as bad as cracked ribs.
