Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)/ Pulmonary Embolism

Has anyone been told by their Onc that cancer patients are vulnerable to Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (aka Economy Class Syndrome).  My right leg swoll up for 3 days so rushed to hospital and after an ultrasound of the leg, was told that I have DVT. Been getting daily shots of Innohep to dissolve the clot and have to wear a thigh high Ted Hose. One dr told me that I was sitting too much (I walk about every 2 hours for 15 minutes) and another doctor told me that I walked too much!!!

One of the ladies at my cancer support group told me that cancer patients can easily get clots like this...News to me..Curious to hear from others in regards to this.

I'm so sorry to hear that you are having the dvt problem.  Like Tealoak, I am also on the blood thinner because they found a PE with the same scan that found my cancer.  My doc, said that OVCA does often cause blood problems and my platelet levels were off the charts high.

I'm still working on getting my blood levels back to a "therapeutic" number, mixing Lovenox shots with cumidon.

I hope you get this under control and will be thinking of you my friend.

I ended up in the ER with multiple blood clots in my legs ( dvt's) and lungs ( PE's).  After they worked on the clots for a week, then they went looking for *why* I was throwing them. It was at that point they found the extensive OvCa.

I have been on Lovenox ( blood thinner) for 6 months.  Four days ago I had a CT scan to see how I have done after 6 carbo/taxol treatments.  My Oncologist told me that I have a large PE above the filter that was put in too keep clots from going into my lungs/heart/brain.  She was surprised that I was still throwing clots despite the Lovenox.

If you google blood clots and cancer they will list ovarian cancer as one of those which is prone to producing clots. In my case I do not know when the cancer would have been found had I not been so impacted by the clots.   My cancer was at stage IV and spread all over.

Just my experience

I was told about the blood clots.  I was told NOT to cross my legs.  When I put my feet up, I should not cross my feet at the ankles.  I don't have any schedule for walking .. just go through the day as I normally would...some days I am very inactive.

I have a port, but not on blood thinners.  I do take a baby aspirin every day.

I don't think I was ever told I was at a higher risk for blood clots....I have been on a blood thinner since my port was placed.  Okay, if one doesn't have a port perhaps she wouldn't automatically be put on a blood thinner......but, if by taking chemo one is at a hightened risk for thrombosis, why would a blood thinner not be automatically be perscribed ?  This is so crazy......
It's terrible, Kimchi, that this has happened to you.  Besides being painful, these things are quite dangerous......you shouldn't have to be dealing with this.  Wish I had a magic wand....I would make all this go away.  I hope it clears quickly.
You take care, kid.
Peace.

Momonie - I doubt that a blood clot can lead to cancer.  Go see your medical doctor if you are concerned.

Kimchi - sorry you are going through all this and I most certainly hope that they come up with a solution to ease the pain.  I have no answers or suggestions, just wanted to send my love.

I am not a cancer patient but for months now i have been suffering from a sharpe pain in my right leg. It starts from my thighs down to my knee. I told my doc maybe i have a pinched nerve. It hurts when i walk, sit, lay everything!  After reading what kimchi said above i think that could be what i have...now im very scared, what kinda test can my doc do to see if i have Deep Vein Thrombosis? And is it something that can lead to cancer?

I remember my doctor telling me I was at more of a risk for blood clots. Someone on here developed one in thier lungs while on chemo. I remember when I went through a spell of passing out in 2007, they kept scanning my head looking for clots.
I'm not sure the reasoning for this because, I know for  me, chemo always made my blood thinner. I suppose some chemo's may be worse than others for this. Avastin was a bad one, I think.
Sorry you had to deal with this - I heard they can be quite painful! I hope the blood thinners help...
Take care,
Becky
