8 millimeter cyst on right ovary post menopausal

Hi, Everyone:

I am writing because I need some feedback from people who have gone through what I am going through. I am 62 years of age and I received results form a transvaginal ultrasound which showed a 8 millimeter cyst on my right ovary (My left ovary was removed in 1999 when another benign cyst was found). I have no symptoms, but was getting my yearly female exam and I told the doctor about the previous ovarian surgery and she knew I was a worrier, so she ordered the TU so I would not worry. Well, now I am worried, because I am post menopausal and I have always heard that cysts in post menopausal women are less likely to be benign (In 1999, I was pre menopausal). My doctor told me on a scale of 1-10, 10 being very concerned, she was at a 1 and told me she wants me to repeat the ultrasound in 8 weeks and take a CA-125...she also told me about a lot of false positives for the CA-125.....I am a little scared ...need from feedback..thank you so much in advance!

It can take several days to get the results. I know waiting is hard. Hopefully you will have an answer soon. If they were thinking Cancer they would be moving a lot faster. I got my Ultrasound results on Monday, my Doctor called my GYN and they had me seeing the Oncologist on Tuesday they did a CT on Friday and I was in surgery the next Monday.

They tell everyone about the false positives. If they had a better test they would use it. They are being careful because Ovarian Cancer often has no symptoms and is easy to miss. They just want to cover all the bases. They are being extra careful and that is good.

Just because a doctor suspects something does not mean you have it. They thought I had jaw Cancer once, I had broken my jaw and the x-ray looks like Cancer. They thought I had Cancer in my gallbladder it was just a stone. They thought I had two lethal conditions in my brain it turned out to be MS which is not lethal. They thought I had breast Cancer it was a lymph node. They thought I had Lupus and I didn't. Diagnosing is guess work and sometimes the options are scarey. Tests alone mean nothing it takes a doctor to interpret them.

It is almost unheard of to find Ovarian Cancer just in the Ovary and have it be that small. My ultrasound showed Cancer all over my abdomen. I had a tumor blocking my bowel which is how it usually is discovered. I could not keep food down. I threw up everything I ate. I also had pain from breathing from a tumor in my diaphragm.

I know you will not stop worrying until all the tests are in. It will not be much longer. I am thinking positive thoughts.

Thank you so much for writing! Yesterday, I took the CA-125 and am waiting for those results...does anyone know how long those results take? I am a little leery of it because my Gyno and others have told me about false positives.....

I agree with HVAC. And 8mm is very small. A noted author gynecologist wrote that benign ovarian cysts are quite a bit more common in post-menopausal women than previously thought. In most cases, these cysts resolve on their own just as they usually do in younger women. So hopefully, you will fit the majority. Since women's ovaries produce hormones into their 80's, it makes sense that cysts could develop and also explains most cases of post-menopausal bleeding that is usually nothing serious.

It not easy. I recently had a breast cancer scare it turned out to be a lymph node in my arm pit but until they did all the testing and told me it was a normal lymph node I was nervous.

You have a less than 2% chance it is Cancer or a 98% it is not Cancer.  Unless you are BRCA positive ( genetic for Cancer ) or have a close relation who has had gynecological Cancer, Breast does not count as much, I would not worry.  I had both.
With me the TU showed Cancer. They had me to the Oncologist the next day and in surgery four days later. When they think it is Cancer everything is moves fast. Also people act all weird to you. Like my doctor and her nurse were super nice to me. Her nurse is usually rude to me. When she was super nice I knew I was in trouble.

CA 125's are not always accurate that is why they do not use them all the time.

Most cysts are benign. I have a rule when the doctors worry then I worry if they are not worried I do not worry.
