Finally Home

Hello all my wonderful forum friends.Wish I could meet you all in person to give you each a big hug from me for all your prayers, love, messages and concern. I am home now. I came home Saturday night. It was a rough time in the hospital. I woke up having gone in for one surgery but woke up having two, two separate incisions too.  They did the total abdominal hysterectomy - I was full of adhesions and my uterus was full of adenomyosis but NO CANCER.  I realize I incredibly lucky I am and it is very hard to post that on this forum. I thought of you ladies so often while I was in there and waiting.  They also did a hernia operation.  As most of you know, I have been unable to go to the bathroom on my own for 2 years; however, after the operation, the nurses (and doctors) couldn't understand why I couldn't pass gas. Well, hello, I haven't done it for 2 years and now I haven't even eaten for 5 days, not sure what there isn't to understand.  So they thought I had an ileus in my intestines, basically where they just freeze up and they were going to put a tube down my throat. In the meantime, they did an xray which showed no ileus but pneumonia on my right lung and a spot on my right lung.  So thankfully, no tube.  Of course, then they put me on more antibiotics (I ended up with 3) and I was so nauseous that I was miserable. They had me on ice chips only because I had thrown up twice. I have newfound admiration for all of you who deal with the chemo nauseous. I was so miserable with that as I know you all must be and I feel even more for you now.  I finally told my nurse, take me off the antibiotics that you just started me on because I am never going to get out of here, They called my doctor and she agreed to take me off two of them and give me real food. That was Saturday (operation on Tuesday).  I couldn't eat much but did manage some Cheerios and felt like a new person. I went home that night.  They had also started me on albuterol treatments which made me terribly sick and I thought they were totally uncalled for, the pulmonologist went crazy with it so I refused the next treatment and that was the best thing I could have done. So, please everyone, be your own advocate. Sometimes, you do know better than they do.

So, I am home now but I am already tired typing this, so will get off now. For those of you who sent me notes and messages, I will respond, just give me time. You don't know how much it meant to me to have you all praying. I know you brought me through this!!  Thank you to Lori for posting the update.

I hope everyone is doing well.  I will slowly get better and to those of you who recommended the grabber thingie. What a lifesave already.

Love you all!!! and miss you too. I will be back soon and hope to hear good news about all of you too.
Colleen

Just speaking for myself, don't worry about responding to my little notes here and there. I'm just happy you're home and able to read them all, know how much we care.

Some antibiotics are very hard on the stomach. I used to think erythromycin was rough until I had to take metronidazole. I lasted 3 days on that and had to quit. It was horrid.

When will you go back in for a checkup on the lungs?

You have a long recovery ahead of you but I think they may have got it all fixed and in 6 months you'll be bopping around feeling so  much better.

My nosy little self wants to know - how are things going in the bathroom department? Did your insides finally wake up and smell the. . . . . .  coffee?

hugs, irene
