Oncology Referral

Went to Internist who sent me for a CAT scan, found 6cm mass. Next day I had and ultrasound external and internal.  That afternoon the internist called to say I was being referred to an Gynolcologic Oncologist.  Why not just send me to an OB/GYN for test first?  If your being referred to an oncologist do they already have a good idea that's where you need to be from the radiologist's report?

Where was the 6 cm mass?  I agree with the others, it could mean that an gyn/onc is the best surgeon to have, even if it's a benign mass.  I applaud the internist for being cautious.  You're in great hands.

I agree wtih marie3B.  It doesn't mean the worst, but if the worst should happen you would definitely want the gyn/onc there.  They are specially trained to deal with gyn cancers and it is far better to have surgery done by a gyn/onc if there is the slightest possibility of cancer.  My SIL had her surgery done by my gyn/onc, and her masses were benign.  She also recovered well from the surgery because of his skill.  Best wishes, Chris P

Being refferred to a gyn/onc does not mean the worst is inevitable.  Gyn/oncs have usually so much more surgical skills and produce better chances of success post surgery. I credit being alive today to my gyn/onc. You are in my prayers. My neighbor's daughter had a large mass removed by my gyn/onc. Hers was benign and because of the great skills of the gyn/onc she bounced back from surgery fast. Marie
