Recently found out i have massive cyst and need it removed.

Hi all I'm new to this. last year during a routine check up for another chronic illness my doctor found what he said was a lump on my right lower side. I could not feel anything but he was not happy and said he wanted me to go for an ultrasound. I got the letter for my appointment for 6 months later, which was fine as i though nothing of it. My appointment came it was suppose to be just a pelvic ultrasound but she said she waned to do a vaginal one also, this is when i started to get nervous. She said it was for a better view of my ovary's as she thought they were too close. After it was done she said no more just to wait for a letter. Two weeks later i got an appointment letter to see a gynecologist specialist. This is when the nerves really kicked in. I waited impatiently for the appointment to arrive. Eventually I went and was told that i had a massive cyst 19cm on my right ovary. The specialist could hardly believe the size of it and for me to have no pain. She said I would need keyhole surgery to remove it, which naturally i almost passed out. She wasn't happy that i had no pain and then said she was unsure it was on my ovary as i should have been in agony. I was to go for a MRI to locate the exact whereabouts of the cyst before surgery. I had the MRI and was suppose to see the specialist two weeks later but my appointment was changed until August. My question is has anyone had any experience with big cyst and having them removed. I was told i was a priory because of the size but since im waiting so long between appointments i guess I'm not. I feel like at any time it could burst and can barely sleep with worry. All I'm dong is overeating to help with the nerves which in return is making me stress more as I am already over weight. Sorry its really long, i hope it makes some sense to someone.

With a cyst this size it is very surprising that it took six months to get the first ultrasound. Of course I don't know how much it grew in those 6 months. But to now be delaying you until August for the MRI results seems crazy too. That being said, if the cyst was on your ovary it seems it would have caused a torsion well before now.

Chances are good that the cyst is benign but you would think there would be more urgency to remove it. Have you tried getting in sooner for the MRI results?

hi, thank you for the response. I have Ulcerative colitis and at a regular check up i was getting heart burn a lot so he did an exam on me and felt a lump. The gynecologist said it was a good find by him, since i had no other symptoms. I initially had an appointment for the 11th of July for the MRI results  but was sent a letter for the 1st of august but my sister is getting married that day. I rang to ask could it be brought back to the original date. The woman on the phone was not the nicest person and said no, it would only be later. I rang the next day to speak to someone else and they moved it back a week but that was all they can do. |It is 6 weeks to the appointment.  The only thing i can think of is maybe it isn't as bad as they initially thought. I am just trying to push it to the back of mind, but with every little pain or discomfort i feel there I instantly think did it burst. I was given no more information other then I have a massive cyst somewhere near or on my right ovary and it must come out. So i have been googling everything i can and as anyone will know that is not a good idea.

Thank you again, I am just freaking out over surgery mostly. I am in college and was hoping it would be done during the summer to avoid missing any days. It does not seem likely at this stage.

You certainly would think that if they were concerned, they would get you in much quicker. I totally understand being freaked out over this impending surgery. I was in your shoes 13 years ago although my cyst was half the size of yours. I have, however, read of women with cysts larger than yours who also had no symptoms except increased midsection girth and some weight gain.

You will want to make sure they save your ovary if at all possible since we need all our parts, not only for reproduction but all our lives for good health. Granted, if the cyst is on your ovary they may not be able to save it but a surgeon with good cystectomy (cyst removal) skills would be more apt to save it or enough of it for normal function. Unfortunately, too many surgeons take the easy way out and just lob off the whole ovary (gonad). Cystectomy is more delicate and takes more time than oophorectomy (ovary removal).

Try to let fear take over. Make a list of questions for your appointment so you are well prepared. Feel free to post back with any questions or for support.

Hey lady friend, my heart is with you. In a similar situation, only baseball sized, not so big. It's the end of Aug, how did your specialist appointment go?

Have you been through the same?  I hope she comes back too and updates.  Let us know how you are doing too.
Thank you, I have surgery to remove tumor/ovary & fallopian tube, unless biopsy is positive for cancer, then probably more will come out.  Scheduled for four weeks out, possibly 2 if they can squeeze me in the schedule on a certain day earlier.

How are you doing specialmom? and anyone else? :)
