3 day post- laparotomy

Hi, I had a laparotomy Tuesday morning to remove a dermoid cyst as well as my right ovary. I started my period last night and I'm a little worried. It hasn't been heavy and this was my scheduled time to start. Is it normal even after ovary removal for the left just to automatically start up and take over? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,
I'm not sure if you've already had your surgery but if it helps, I had a 35 cm paraovarian cyst removed yesterday. I had a laparotomy but the cut is only like 2 inches below my navel. I had wonderful doctors so find someone you're comfortable with and who is experienced. The incision pain is very tolerable especially with the pain meds. Worst part is all the gas in my abdomen which gets worse at night and can branch up to my shoulder and neck and be pretty painful. But walking around a bit and taking stool softeners + lots of fluids really helps it to dissipate.  Sleeping propped up also seems to help me out a lot. It can take anywhere from 2-8 weeks to recover depending on your incision size and how easy you take it, but at the same time make sure you're walking around to ease the cramps. Best of luck to you!

Hi there just curious, how are you feeling now? Did your doctor give you an approximation time of how long would it take you to fully recover? I was also told that I needed a laparotomy for my 17cm dermoid cyst, so I was wondering what kinds of things to expect.

Ok, thank you for your reply! It did go away after a few days.

Everyone's body is different. Sometimes the body can just "pick up where it left off." But in other cases, it takes some time for the menstrual cycle to regulate after gyn surgery especially after having an ovary removed. You may still end up having some irregularity even though you're now on schedule.
