Can a Complex Cyst shrink?

Hello all,

I was wondering can a Complex Ovarian Cyst shrink?  Last August I had a 3.1 cm complex cyst rupture ( I went to ER) - Within a few months it was at 4.3cm-  Last week I got my "enemy" and pain started mildly (I thought it was my gastritis ) So I took antiacids and so forth (even a pain killer I had from August)- For a few hours the pain was increased and finally dropped me to my knees - just like the pain I had with the rupture except, I think, this time the pain was way worse!! I did not go to ER as I felt I knew this is what it was...Now 2 months ago my last TVU showed simple cyst on left ovary 2.3cm and 4 x 3 x 3.6 cm Complex cyst on Right ovary- I waited a week before going in for another Ultrasound and it shows the simple cyst is no longer there and the Complex cyst decreased in size - It is showing complex with internal echos and thickened wall - another follow up recommended - Ok - My OBGYN has yet to call - Now if a cyst ruptured and a week went by would it show smaller in size due to the rupture - Would a rupture still be noticed after 1 week ??  Thank God for these sites because its been since August I am dealing with this cyst - My stomach is ALWAYS bloated, nausea , PAIN always- and I just dont know what to do...SO...if anyone out there knows the answer to this questions, I would greatly appreciate it!!  Thank you again!!!!

Hello
Thank you for your reply...I have checked with another OB (woman) who said it could have twisted and thats why it does not show fluid (as the first one did) I was debating on going to her instead of my original OB but just was not sure what to do and ironically enough his office called me to go over the report and eventually told me he was closing his office next month, which would lead me into finding another OB anyway...WOW right.. I was offered birth control (2 years ago) but being 36 and never having children I was not comfortable with that offer so I declined.  I will be making an appointment with the other Doctor who said she would do a follow up ultra sound in 1 month and poss. a biopsy on my endometr..layer(?) as it is too thick for the times it showed thick..whatever that means...So right now its a waiting game and we will find out what actually happened, or atleast I hope..My orig. OB wanted to wait another 6 months so I am happy this other Doctor is willing to take it one step further as Ovarian cancer does run in my family.  It is funny that you recommended certain things as my male OB was not for any of it, even when I told him back in Oct. I was sooo bloated that I cant fit into my pants anymore and he said eating a hamburger would make me bloated.  I knew he was not putting his entire heart into it and now I know why...It is sad that after 20 years he could just leave this and not even tell me he was closing shop.  He never asked about other symptoms I am having, like constant burping, gas pains, ovairan pains and so forth. But God works in a way that noone can understand and I am so happy he was listening to me the other day as I would have waited 6 months just to find out my doctor was gone....

Thank you so much for your reply and I will update once I know better as to hope it helps someone else in the same shoes....
Take care and God Bless and thank you again...Its so nice to be able to talk to someone about all this...

I am not an expert but your experience definitely shows they can.  When a cyst bursts it would no longer exist and there would be fluid in your uterus.  Subsequent ultrasounds would show a new cyst that had formed.

Have you tried birth control for your recurrent cysts?  If that is not an option I would be pressing your doctor to look at doing an exploratory laparoscopic to see if something should be removed.  Don't ignore tremendous pain as sometimes when a cyst bursts it can result in infection and sometimes the pain is from torsion (twisting) of the cyst and can result in death of the ovary or infection.  Please keep us posted on how you are doing.
