Complex 5cm cyst
Hey all - just diagnosed with a 5 cm “mostly complex” cyst with some blood flow. They ordered ca-125 and I’m waiting for those results. Also have an mri scheduled next week. I am 46 and perimenopausal. How scared should I be? Any other questions I need to ask of my doctor? I have a paternal aunt who passed away from ovarian cancer but she was post menopausal. Both she and I are/were negative for brca.
Hey all - just an update. I had the ovary and both Fallopian tubes removed this week. They diagnosed me with a granulosa cell tumor. Currently awaiting more tests - biopsy of endometrium and inhibin blood test. This is scary as all get out. Could be worse but scary.

I am sorry to hear that. From what I read, this type of tumor is slow growing and typically stage 1. Keep us posted. Hugs.
So I got the results back today - finally - and I think they are bonkers! Per the MRI, it’s not a cyst, it’s a pelvic kidney?!? Two c-sections, probably 200 ultrasounds through those 2 high risk pregnancies and 5 iuis and IVFs, a gallbladder removal, and a laparoscopy for possible endometriosis and NO diagnosis before today of a pelvic kidney???? And yet I have cyst pain, hair loss, and constant bleeding that is unrelated to this diagnosis of a pelvic kidney. Makes no sense whatsoever. Meet with a nephrologist on Wednesday. I think they are nuts. Lol

A pelvic kidney?! I had never heard of that... had to look it up. Yes, hard to believe with your medical history that this had not been diagnosed prior. But then it seems they sometimes focus in on whatever it is they suspect and "miss the forest for the trees." That being said, dysfunctional bleeding is pretty common in the mid to late 40's as our bodies transition into menopause. The hormonal changes can also cause hair loss. But that wouldn't explain the pain. I wonder if the cyst resolved or ruptured in the week or so between the u/s and MRI? The pain from ruptured cysts can hang on for quite awhile. And it could take some time for your menstrual cycle to get back to normal. Let me know what more you find out. I hope this is all over soon.

Sorry for my delayed response. I am not aware of any natural remedies for ovarian cysts although that doesn't mean there aren't any. Since your MRI was scheduled for today, I suppose you are still waiting on the results from your doctor. I am interested to hear what it showed.

Are there natural remedies to prevent getting cysts? This is the third (first complex tho) cyst I’ve had in 3 years. Would love to not go through this so often.

I am sorry you are dealing with this. I have been in your shoes and wish I had done things differently. I am surprised by how many doctors do the CA-125 test because it is not accurate at diagnosing ovarian cancer especially in premenopausal women. There are too many false positives (elevated results with no cancer) as well as some false negatives. Very few cysts (including complex ones) are malignant so the odds are very much in your favor. Most cysts resolve on their own, no treatment needed. Some cysts that appear to be complex on imaging are actually multiple simple cysts which give the appearance of one cyst with septations (hence complex appearance).
5 cm is still on the small side and it seems in most cases this would warrant monitoring it via periodic ultrasounds. Once cysts get around 7, 8 or 9 cm, there is concern of ovarian torsion so surgery is usually recommended. Unfortunately, far too many gynecologists remove the ovary or ovaries (and even the uterus) when all that should be removed is the cyst itself (cystectomy). Removal of even one ovary has been shown to cause long-term harm (such as an increased risk of parkinsonism and dementia). Hysterectomy (uterus removal) is associated with increased health risks too despite the fact that over 90% of them are elective (for benign conditions).
