Welcome to the community. Living without ovaries (regardless of your age) is a VERY VERY serious health condition. Numerous medical studies show it does more harm than good for the 98% of women who are not at risk for ovarian cancer. Ovary removal increases risk for a number of health problems and can severely reduce quality of life since every cell in the body needs these hormones for proper function. The ovaries of a woman with all her parts produces hormones at least to age 80. Do a web search for something like "pubmed bilateral oophorectomy long term health" to find these studies.

Consider yourself lucky since far too many gynecologists remove women's ovaries for no reason. In all age groups, 55% of women lose healthy ovaries at the time of hysterectomy and in the 45 to 64 age group, this rate is 78%.

Both my ovaries and my uterus were removed for a benign ovarian cyst 9 years ago at age 49. I am suffering not only the endocrine havoc but also the anatomical, skeletal, and sexual damages from the loss of my uterus.

I would give anything in this world to get my 30cm cyst removed when I have my surgery this month and get to keep both ovaries (so I have a spare) so I would count yourself extremely lucky! If they don't need to take an ovary, they won't!

What did you authorize him to do?

If the stated purpose of the operation was to remove ovarian cysts and he did so, it is a good thing to retain your ovaries, not a bad thing.  If he was able to save them despite removing a cyst or cysts, he was being skillful.  Losing the ovaries is not a happy thing for many, many women.

On the other hand, if you told him "I wish to have my ovaries removed whether or not you could remove the cyst(s) without removing the ovaries," and he said "No problem, this operation is to remove your ovaries whether needed for cyst removal or not," and then he did not do it, you have a medical complaint to make.
