Is there an alternative to laparotomy?

I'm 26yrs old and I have never been pregnant however, last week I was given the news that I have a 2.5" cyst in my right ovary, I have been scheduled for surgery within the next month. When I was 3yrs old my appendix ruptured and a laparotomy was performed. My Dr informed me that she preferred to do a laparotomy because of my previous surgical history and because the scar tissue of my previous surgery it would be difficult to do a laparosopy. I want to know is this true? Is a laparotomy the only option? Could I stress that I prefer a laparoscopy or that my Dr atleast try?

Thank you, I appreciate your advice. Fortunately, according to my GYN it is not fluid filled but the concern is on 10/30/10 I had my regular annual and everything came out alright. It wasn't until my physical in 02/09/11 when a ct scan was done for concerns i might have a hernia was the cyst was noticed. CT results are showing benign. So I will wait and see. Again thank you for your advice.

I am so sorry to hear you are facing another surgery.  I can't second guess your doctor's instincts on this one.  However, your cyst is small and it seems like a less invasive procedure would be possible.  Usually, cysts are monitored over a period of time until they reach 5cm or larger.  But, cysts with worrisome signs or that are giving troublesome symptoms are often removed when they are smaller.  If your mass is solid or complex, it is very important that it is removed intact.  Therefore, a laparotomy is the best choice.  But, if it is fluid filled then you might want to seek a second opinion.  Simple cysts can usually be drained or removed with a minimally invasive surgery.  Also, recently there has been an increase in the use of the DaVinci robotic surgery.  It won't hurt to do some reasearch and get a second opinion if you are concerned.  But, if you have a solid or complex mass, then the laparotomy is definitely the safest way to go!  I hope all turns out benign.  Please keep us updated on how you are doing.
