Ovarian Cyst Unresolved after 6 months

Hi,

I'm being slowly driven insane by the cyst on my left ovary, so if you could please help I'll love you forever!
To start April 2011 - first symptoms of something not right started to appear - urinary urgency, frequency and UTI'S for the first time ever, pelvic discomfort, constipation (sorry) and PAIN in my hip.
All this continued, and went to the Doc's in September 2011 about the urinary urgency as it was driving me insane. As I'm 24 he decided it was probably Chlamydia and sent me to the GUM clinic (oh the indignity of being young-ish!), who did a PE and found mass. Sent for ultrasound and was diagnosed with 7.9cm cyst on left ovary.
NHS confuses me, and check up scans kept being postponed so I wasn't scanned again until the end of January 2012. Was told cyst would resolve by itself but it was still there, still 7.9cm. Radiographer (or Radiologist?the lovely woman who did my TV scan) said she would fax my doctor to refer me for an urgent Gynae appointment. 3 weeks later I get a letter from my GP saying they want to see me to discuss scan results...no mention of gynae appointment?
I'm worried sick, this thing is pressing on nerves in my leg so that it hurts when I walk (and I walk lots for work!) I have constant back pain, pelvic heaviness and discomfort, bloating, random cycles.
I feel like a hypocondriac, as GP is clearly not as worried as I am. Am I over reacting, is it normal to have a cyst last that long?
Thank you xx

Hi I know it's been a few years but the problems you had are exactly what I am going thru now. Did you ever find out what was the source to your problem? I went to the ER back in July this year and they said I had a cyst on my left ovary and that it would go away on it's own and for awhile it quit hurting but as of lately the pain is coming back, it's a painful pulling feeling in my lower left abdomen. Feel free to email directly at ***@****. Thanks

So gynae appointment has been canceled AGAIN!!I'm just going insane, I've stopped having sex with my boyfriend as it hurts too much, I'm constantly boated - or pregnant looking! My sister actually asked me if I'm secretly expecting, as it's like the bump of someone who's in early preganancy (I'm quite thin though, so I suppose it's more noticeable?). Urgh, anyway just venting!!x

Hello everyone thanks for your comments, everyone here is so lovely!Have an outpatient appointment for the gynae on the 13th of April so will let you know how it goes!Have been using this cyst as an excuse to be a bit greedy though...everytime I look at my tummy I just think 'Oh I'm bloated from the cyst'...not just a bit pudgy from all the chocolate I've been eating!xx

Yes - their definintion of emergency is not same as ours.  That is for sure!!!  I just wish the doctors would get the fact that just a quick phone call = 5minute Q&A session can really go a long way....we can only keep hoping.  Try to have a calm and restful weekend.....

Thank you so much for your replies! The doctor said they'd call during the week if there was anything wrong with my bloods - and they haven't called so I'm assuming it's just a cyst!Still waiting for the gyane appointment ( I think my definition of emergency differs slightly with the Nhs definition - so slow) - but hopefully I'll get word next week. Thanks again for your replies, it's nice to know that other people know what I'm going through!

I can't push this one point enough...BE PERSISTENT with all doctors.  Your body and this cyst are a serious matter and should be treated as such.  Your youth does not mean that your reproductive health should get put off simply because you are under 25.  Quite the opposite, you are young and should protect your ability to reproduce at all costs.
I am 31 now and had a cyst the size of a honeydew melon and my left ovary removed in August 2011, I am still recovering.  Yes I can run up a flight of stairs now, I can drive my kids to school, I can go to work, but mentally and physically, I am exhausted from the constant battle with doctors to make them take my concerns seriously.  My new husband and I were trying to have a baby for a year and a half when my GP finally started to take my concerns to heart and in February 2010 I started getting tests done.  I suffered for over a year with the pain and only made it through the pain on morphine in the 4 months before my surgery and the month after surgery.  I am glad that my cyst did not rupture before my surgery, because I probably would have dies due to the sheer size of my cyst and the fluid inside it.  I now suspect that it had been growing for at least 3 years before it was found and once it was found, the surgeon assumed it was the size of a navel orange and didn't see how big it actually was until he opened me up in August.

Long story short, don't let anyone tell you not to worry, if you sit back and stop worrying, no one will pay attention to your concerns.

Emm so I went to the doc, who said that the scan showed that the cyst is still there, but I have free fluid in my pelvis. She's doing blood tests for inflamatory markers and CA125...I'm a little bit freaked out, surely I'm too young to have ovarian cancer? On the plus side I'm getting an emergency gynae appointment, which means I get to skip the hideous NHS waiting list - gotta look at the positives!x

All doctor's like to look at things differently, but I have been told repeatedly that a cyst larger than 6cm is almost ALWAYS removed. They do not resolve on their own. I dealt with mine for as long as I could. I wanted to try to make it past the end of the year so I could work on this year's insurance deductibles, but the pain had gotten to the point where I was walking bent over (and didn't even really realize it). I had the surgery to remove mine 12/20/11. It was 9.4cm and ended up being endometriosis. I would call the doctor and talk to his nurse. Let her know that the symptoms are getting too bad for you to continue with it and would like to discuss the options with a GYN. Ask if they will give you a referral. Don't wait for them to make the decision, you are the one who is affected by it... They could wait forever! Good luck!
