Ovarian Cyst

I am in a panic right now. My sister has had a CT scan and Ultrasound which has confirmed that she has a massive cyst on her right ovary. They've sent her home for now but did some blood tests meantime. She  been told to attend the gynaelogical dept next week. She 's pre-menopausal and never had any problems in this area before. She is understandably very worried whether she has cancer or not. Her stomach is very swollen due to the size of the cyst (not been told the exact size). All they've really said so far is that it will have to come out but after the blood tests they hope to decide what kind of op she'll need. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks

I think doctors are pretty straight forward when they see something that is concerning and since your sister haven't heard from them just yet maybe it's a good sign. Your sister should be referred to the obstetrical oncologist to make sure that the appropriate steps are taken during removal of the cyst. The truth is until the cyst is taken out they will not know for sure if it is benign or cancerous. I myself am scheduled for a surgery next week and am worried because my cyst is pretty complex and large. I had CT scan and x-rays and blood tests but haven't heard back from anybody and am too scared to call them myself to find out. I wish your sister quick recovery to health!

So sorry to hear you're terrible news. This is an awful time for you and I understand totally. Try and remain positive though as you're CA125 isn't the highest I've seen and can be influenced by lots of things, even stress!(according to my sister's consultant). Will send you a  personal message.

I am so happy to hear that they are finally giving you some information and they you are satisfied with the care. I scheduled appointment with my primary last week who called my gyn/ oncologist. Blood test, CA125 was very high, 278. He told me it is most likely cancer. I am devastated to hear this news. My surgery was supposed to be this Friday but I have a  bad cold and will probably have to reschedule it because of that. I just want that thing out of me :-( I am so upset!!!

Hi there, hope that you're feeling ok and have managed to get the resulrs of your blood work back. My sister and I saw her consultant today and found out that the cyst is a massive 23cm. However, although the CA125 test shows her reading is elevated at 97 (should be 35), this can be because of stress and infection. He wasn't too concerned about it. He thinks that at the moment it looks benign but won't be able to tell until a week after the op to remove it. He's meeting with a team to discuss her case and will then give us his recommendations on 27th April (op will probably be in May). He has already ruled out keyhole surgery and a caesarian type cut due to the size of the cyst (which he needs to remove intact). The options will be whether they need to remove both ovaries or do a full hysterectomy. Have to say the consultant was excellent with her.

Thank you I hope so too. I was myself surprised by the size of my cyst. The Dr explained to me that because of the pregnancy my tummy stretched and cyst had a lot of space to grow without being noticed early. He also explained that because the cyst is 'movable' it may rub against other organs and that can show inflammation in the blood test but may mean nothing. I myself am finding it difficult to wear regular pants because of the pressure on my tummy and the pain. You should google a list of questions for the Dr when your sister goes to the appointment. I wasn't prepared and that's why I don't know much about my cyst now.

Thanks for your comments. My sister sees her own practice doctor on Friday but it too scared to ask him if the blood tests are through. Guess we'll find out when we see the consultant at the hospital on Tuesday. As I said, we don't know the kind of cyst it is or the measurements. We just know that the person doing the ultrasound told her the cyst runs the length of her body and that it was massive 9which explains the large swollen tummy). At the moment, she's even having difficulty getting up from her seat. It's just a horrible time to live through. Anyway, hope all goes well with your surgery next week x

Thanks for that. Think it's the same blood test you've mentioned. We were told her blood test wouldn't be back until the end of this week. They said that even if it indicated the cyst is cancerous, they wouldn't know for sure until it was under a microscope. Hosp called her yesterday and she has an appt on Tuesday but not sure what they'll do. Guess it will be to give her the results of the blood test and then her surgical options. They've already said she'll probably lose her right ovary. Think she'll cope ok as long as she doesn't have cancer. We're keeping everything crossed! Will be thinking of you on Monday x

I've just found your post and if it helps I had an MRI and that was where they found all of mine,  I also had a blood test called a CA125, this was the first thing they did for me, it is the one which can indicate if it is cancerous.  I found that my GP was quite a lot of help on this, I rang and asked for a telephone consult with her.  My test came back within 48 hours but each lab is different.  Sorry I havent been much help but I understand her worry, I was a nervous wreck for days.  Sx
