Ovarian Cysts

I am 49 years old, single and haven't been in a relationship in 18 months (went through a bad break up).  So, I meet a really wonderful man and when we had sex it was very painful and the bloating, cramping and pain afterward lasted for days, so I go to my OB and they find an ovarian cyst on each ovary.  They said "Let's watch it over the course of a few months and see if it goes away on its own or bursts".  I agree that's probably fine to do, but I just can't handle intercourse and it's becoming a real strain on this very new relationship.  The pain I feel after intercourse has me doubled over.  The doctor said another option is surgery but they worry about scar tissue.  I just don't know how to get myself out of this situation.  I weigh 125 pounds and am in good physical health.  I don't know what scar tissue does or if that is painful in itself, all I know is that I need to handle this health situation quickly for my own health and for a healthy new relationship.  I need any suggestions.  Is surgery really a bad thing to do?

Yes, hard to say how long it will take. How big are the cysts?

Thank you for your insight.  It sounds like their are many risks involved with surgery.  I may have to explore other options such as Birth Control.  I wish I knew how long it takes for them is dissipate on their own, but I understand each case is different.

I am sorry you are going through this. I had an ovarian cyst and wish my gynecologist had taken a conservative approach. Instead, I was rushed into surgery and over-treated. Scar tissue is a real risk. And there are other risks such as losing the ovaries and their life-long vital functions. Or even if the ovaries are not removed, the surgery could affect their function. And then of course there are risks of pelvic surgery such as infection, blood clots, nicking of bladder and/or bowel, scar tissue, and anesthesia risks.

Birth control pills are oftentimes prescribed to prevent and even shrink ovarian cysts but I don't know how effective they are and how quickly they work. I am not aware of any natural remedies but there may be some (such as DIM that helps metabolize estrogen). I was also 49 when I developed an ovarian cyst. I would think that the sporadic ovulations and therefore lower progesterone (and fluctuating estrogen) at this age would be the cause but I don't know.
