What to expect with a laparotomy?

Im 18 years old and go in for surgery on tuesday. The doctor found a 23 cm cyst on my right ovary and told me it's the size of a basketball (yes, a b-ball..lol). The doctor seems confident that this procedure will go off without any issues, but im still concerned. I'm no stranger to surgery and hospitals, but this surgery will make an incision from my pubic bone up and around my belly button all the way up to my breast bone. I'm a little intimidated, okay alot, by the thought of this surgery. I walk on forearm crutches and I was wondering how that might affect me getting around? My doctor told me it will be about a 6 week home-stay after the surgery, so are there any suggestions how to get back as much to normal during that time as i can? Also, (sorry for all these questions), my stomach actually looks like im quite pregnant, which of course im not, but will that get smaller from the surgery?

Thank you for all your help.

Thank you all for your help. I had the surgery a couple of weeks ago and it surprisingly went great, thankfully. The one issue was the epidural wasn't placed correctly so i was in horrid pain for a few days, but it slowly went away. I still have a little trouble when i move because it's still very sore of course. Walking was the hardest thing to get used to since the crutches weren't all that great, But overall, I feel healthier than i have in years!!!

Within a few months your left ovary will take over for your missing right one and will ovulate each month.  You will be able to concieve with the one ovary.

Hi there.  I just had a similiar laparotomy June 6 for a grapefruit sized cluster of cysts.  I had the same cut largely because of previous surgeries along that line.  I was very pleased with the job my doctor did - my scar is nice and flat.

After your surgery they will likely get you on your feet in the first day or two afterwards.  You will get used to holding your abdomen when you sit up or turn over and holding a pillow against it will help too, even when you go to the bathroom.  Keep on top of your pain meds and do walk a lot around the ward.  The gas pains can be even worse than the surgery pain and walking will help with that too.  Ask for Ovol or GasX to help with the gas and drink peppermint tea.  Because so much of your weight is on your arms you should be OK with the walking.  If you get leg cramps after surgery it likely means you need potassium.  Eat potato chips, potatoes, bananas and drink Gatoraade.  They will quickly go away.

Take advantage of your time at home to let others take care of you.  Sleep is the best thing for healing.  Between the 2nd and 3rd week you will start to feel like yourself and reduce your pain meds.  You will be able to go for short walks, out to dinner or even grocery shopping.  You will be very tired afterwards.  I was off 6 weeks and at the 4 week mark felt wonderful.  I could drive again and a lot of my energy was returning.

I, too, had the pregnant belly before hand.  It will take 3 to 4 weeks after the surgery for it to get back to where it should be.  Just keep on drinking your water, eat foods to help you keep your bowels moving, and gradually increase your activity.

Good luck with everything.  let us know how it goes.

I am so sorry to hear about your troubles.
I would start with telling you that good food , vitamins-especially Vit C and minerals good clean water is a great start to fast healing. Junk and fast  food and processed food is the oposite. Your body needs to have something to rejuvanate from the strain of surgery and close your incision without infections and having to take antibiotics for them. Your immune system will be impaired and that's why you need to nourish your body and repair you rimmune syetem as soon as you are able to eat solid foods.
After my surgery I did not try to walk for three days and after that I made myself to walk every day so my muscles would not get weak.
Having a b-ball removed from your stomach I am sure it will get back to normal in no time. I don't think you will look pregnant after surgery , little swollen maybe but not  huge.
Take care, Sunes.
