post op drainage

I had laparoscopic surgery a week ago today for 3 ovarian cysts.  I'm still having drainage from my belly button incision and was wondering how long that will last.  Its kinda gross and I don't see my doctor until next week.

I don't know how much drainage you are experiencing, but it wouldn't hurt to call the Drs. office just to check. I don't remember having much , if any, drainage. I would think a tiny bit of alcohol wouldn't hurt, but I'm not a Dr. and always wiser to check with the experts. Is the incision red or warm to the touch? I'm sure it will be o.k , but even the nurse can probably help..

The doctor will check how much drainage there still is at your next appointment. Then sometimes they decide to either take it off, or wait another few days. Call your doctor if you have any doubts :) Good luck and rest...

Thanks for responding, ladies!  I have one more question if you're still around - how long does post op vaginal bleeding usually stick around for?  Thanks again!

Hi again,
I'm guessing it depends on the type of procedure.. I had the hysteroscopy & D&C. .. Now, I'm lots older than you so I don't imagine I would have as much post op bleeding as you.. I only had a few days. I think it depends on the individual and what was "done"..

I actually had absolutely no vaginal bleeding, but I have PCOS and my periods have been absent for so long... that probably had something to do with it. Sorry I can't help. Ask your doctor what's normal.

FYI - I ended calling my doc yesterday because i really wasn't comfortable with the look of my belly button.  It was still draining and even looked as if the incision opened.  It was gross.  Well i was right - it is in fact open and infected.  On antibiotics now and cleaning with peroxide 3 times a day.  Lesson learned?  Go with your gut when you think something isn't right.
