Is it possible to forget too much when one has PTSD?

A relative of mine was in a combat zone for 2 years, upon return he worked back home another two years, and after roughly 4 years upon return he was diagnosed with PTSD.
He has started to forget his working experience back home, like it is erased from his memory. Is that possible,
and forget also other things.
