I was accused, indirectly, of tampering with a prescription

I am about to lose my mind over this situation. I have had the same Dr for 10 years. She has me on Norco 10/325 four a day. Also Klonopin 4 ml a day. She kept not showing up for appointments So she sent my prescriptions by mail they were on a triplicate. I took them to the pharmacy I have used for years. All was fine until she came out to tell me a date was wrong the script was dated the 16th and the refill date someone had written in the 15th, That caused a red flag to go up.I was so confused as to what the pharmacist was saying and noticed that I did not put that date in there.
The entire thing lasted over an hour she did the best she could. Still the Doctors office said the date was blank when they were sent out.???? Because of this my Doctor fired me from her practice without even allowing me to show her the paper script and work this nightmare out. I was in a bad elevator crash 15 years ago and I am in a lot of pain. Now no Dr, and I am so hurt, angry and confused. I don't know what to do .I have to try to find a new Dr.. Her letter of dismissal was polite and offered me 30 days of care. But she went on vacation for three weeks of my 30 days.I have an appointment with her on the last day she will treat me. I am hoping to keep her long enough to find a new Dr but she has made it impossible. I am totally disabled and can lose everything by not having a Dr. I am still in shock over the prescription and who put that date on there!! Also 7 Drs. I have contacted ar not taking new patients. sheesh!!!

Do you have health insurance?  Your insurance company can help you find a new doctor.  Even if on Medicaid or Medicare.  Try to find a new general practice doctor AND a pain doctor to prescribe your pain meds.  Maybe the pain doctor will have more ideas in addition to the opioids (I've had good luck with a drug called Savella which was developed for fibromyalgia).  I had a similar Rx issue with a doctor in Denver.  The mistake was hers but I was fired from her practice anyway.  I was shocked and humiliated.  One thing I will tell you that turned out to be important for me.  Request your records from the ex-doctor (they may charge you for them) and remove any information about this incident.  Read the records thoroughly...the records should contain facts not doctor's personal judgment regarding you or your condition. You will hand your records to the new doctors.  Do not sign a release for new doctor(s) to get your records directly from the old doctor or speak to the doctor about your case.

Thanks Laura for reiterating and adding to what I said. It's so true for all of us - we need to know what's in our medical records. I've found surprises and untruths in a few of mine. If we keep track of them we are more able to make corrections - or add our two cents to the permanent record(s).

I'm sorry that a similar issue happened to you. Life with Chronic Pain can be more than challenging.

Hi Madison,

Welcome to our Pain Management Forum. I am glad that you found us and took the time to post - but so very sorry to hear about your situation.

I'm too confused by this incident. Your PMP is claiming she sent the scripts to you without a date?? That's not legal. I'd ask to see the copy of the original RX. My PMP makes a photocopy of each and every RX he gives out. If there is ever any question he can refer to those copies.

I'd also request a copy of your medical records covering the last 24 months at least. You're going to be hard pressed to find a PMP that will take you as you're considered dismissed. You are going to need all the good records you can get.

Sadly we are at the mercy of our PMP. We have no rights today. However if the PMP claims she did not date the RX you may have an argument there. I hope she has put that in writing somewhere - or at least your pharmacy did.

I'd make my case at your last appointment but sorry - I don't hold out a lot of hope that you will be reinstated. Any practitioner that consistently misses appointments doesn't sound so great to me. I understand if she had emergencies - but three months in a roll? Something sounds fishy with her. I'd Google her name to see if she has anything legal going on.

In the meantime I'd keep making calls to locate another PMP. Don't give up - even if you have to travel out of your area.
Please keep in touch. I'll be interested to know how you are doing - and how the last appointment goes.

Take Care My friend in Pain,
~Tuck
