Yes! Been on it for going on 15 years with great results... for chronic pain.
Kadian works for me, and then tolerance "kicks in". I started on a low dose, had to increase it in increments as my tolerance increased. I think the tolerance "thing" is a reality with all narcotics. The problem arises when the doctor thinks your dose is to high. I switch from one opiate to another when my tolerance gets me into megadose ranges. I switch from morphine when it gets to 2oo mg. 3x daily, oxycontin when 80mg. 3x daily doesn't cut it, etc. I have a great doctor who understands these things. I know what it's like to have a doctor that doesn't though also!
Oh Brian, Please work full time on that magic wand and I'll give you directions to my house!!!
You might want to consider methadone. It produces no high. It is a serious narcotic with horrid withdrawal symptoms but it is a good pain management one. I wish I could find the articles that describe the benefits of methadone for pain management. I need to find the time to search for it.
Have a great Thanksgiving.
I take Kadian and have been on it for five years. It works well for me and I do not have any side effects at all what so ever. I do remember when I first started taking Morphine it gave me a heavy feeling in my body. It did take some getting used to and it went away after a short while. It is long acting and I did not get a buzz that anyone would want to have. If anything, it made me feel worse until I became acclamated to it. It was worth it though, for it really helps to control my pain. I have tried almost all pain meds, and this works just as well, with the least amount of side effects. Other meds had side effects that I did not like. It depends on your body and how you react to it. Everyone is different. Good luck with what ever you decide.
Thanks so much for the replies. I have just been doing some minor research on different pain med options and this was one I ran across where many said they didn't get the "high" associated with other narcotic pain meds but many still got some great pain relief. I'm sure I'll have some questions about some other ones here soon also! Everyone here is just loaded with knowledge and so willing to help others. I greatly appreciate that!
Thank you all for taking the time to help me out! I feel like we are one big happy family! Well, that is as happy as we can be since we all suffer from cp! I pray that one day everyone's pain will vanish! Once I get this magic wand that I have been working on finished I will be paying each and every one of you a visit!
Thank you again,
Brian
Hi Brain,
Kadian is a brand name of a morphine sulfate in an extended-release oral formulation.
It is a Package information indicates that is is a Schedule II controlled substance, with an abuse liability similar to other opioid analgesics. It can be abused in a manner similar to other opioids, legal or illicit.
I have been prescribed MS Contin (same as Kadian) and the dose may not have been strong enough but I did not notice any significant pain reduction. I did not experience a "high" from it either. I did has some respiratory issues and my physician and I decided it was not the right drug for me.
There are many ppl that take this narcotic for pain managment and it is effective. If you have a history of abuse I would be concerned with this medication. It is a decision that you and your physician should make together. He/she will know how this medication may work for you better than we do.
Good luck to you in what ever you decide.
Take Care,
Tuck
Brian,
I would 'HIGHLY' recommend the Fentanyl patch to treat severe pain. No pun intended either because HIGHLY is capatalized!!!
It does not give you a buzz as some 'big dog' pain meds do, and also no pills to keep taking aside from whatever you may or may not need for B/T pain.
A patch is prescribed every 72 hours although some do in fact change it out at 48 hours.
I have never taken kadian nor do I know anyone who has or is. Are you considering it?
-Brian
Everyone is different so I could not really tell you how it would effect you personally.
I have not taken this medication but have tried Morphine Sulphate and it was not for me.
I think some of the other members here are taking this medication so they will have some input too:)
