i 'stepped up' from oxcodone to the fentanyl patch with percocet for breakthrough pain.  the patch helped for the first 5 months, but it has a lot of side effects for me. not everyone gets the side effects and many find it very helpful.  i am going to ask to be switched to oxcontin ER with the percocets for breakthrough pain.  at least for a trial period of 2 months.  if the side effects don't go away, i will probably go back on them

I understand some pain docs are trying methadone for their patients with little or no insurance.  It's a very old synthetic, long-acting pain med, so consequently, it is very cheap.  In smaller towns, however, the only place you can get it is through a methadone clinic for addicts.  Also, methadone has its own problems when used long term.  It really causes "dry mouth" so dental care and attention is essential.  Have a long talk with your doc before deciding on it, but it just might be the ticket for your situation.

My insurance pays for my pain meds, percocet, fiornal, zanflex, soma's, and klopin.
But its thru my husband's work, we have medical insurance thru Aetna.
I pay a co pay for my meds $15 for generic.
Don't get the name brand cause it would cost me too much.
Are you married? Does your wife work? Does she have any medical thru her job?
I never know medicad didn't pay for the pain meds, my friend has it for disability it paid for her loratabs, and my grandmother had medicaid and humane and it paid for her percocet 10's.
You might try some of the people who put the medicine out and see if they have a program that will help you pay for your meds.
Whats that one that Montel Williams does a commercial for ?
Maybe do a search on google on it and see if you can find groups or something that will help you pay for the medicine.
Good luck

I am in a the same boat sort of.  I have severe lower back pain w/ nerve pain down both legs & feet.  I've had 3 surgeries, with the most recent being a double fusion at L4-5 & L5-S1.  However, the last surgery seemed like it was going to help, but then my pain level started to get back to the 7/8 of 10 level on an average day.  In the past I have tried the epidural spinal injections 8-9 times and all sorts of medication.  I had taken oxycontin for a year around 5 years ago at the 20mg x 3 daily, but this was just when it was starting to get worse.  However, I quit "cold turkey" b/c of all the bs surronding it in the media and my family not understanding what it actually was & always being worried.  It was very hard, but I made it.  However, as my 2 discs completely degenerated, the percocet 10mgs just didn't do it at all.  So, I went back to oxycontin ( which is through a pain specialist & I also talk w/ my surgeon about it).  However with the pain getting so bad I could not work or do anything with my 2 young children or my wife.  So, I am currently taking a very high dose of oxycontin and oxyIR for breakthru pain.  Also, I was able to get the brand name oxycontin which worked by FAR the best, but now have to get the generic oblong ones which are the worse.  The round generic are somewhat better, but the brand seems to be almost 2-3x's better.  Anyways, for the breakthru pain I have tried percocet, MSIR (morphene instant release) 30mg 3x's day (I think), the OXYIR, and hydromorphone.  I only took the hydromorphone for a month or 2 b/c I didn't think it worked, but I'm not really sure b/c this was when I was the worst pain & my oxycontin was a lot lower too.  The Morphene IR caused my hands and other joints to swell (possibly allergic to it).  Right now as I stated, I am beginning to be in severe pain all the time again.  Also, my COBRA insurance is running out this month and I have medicaid but it doesn't cover oxycontin... which i couldn't imagine the pain w/o it...  I think in the past i had the fentanyl patches & they didn't work, but I also think i had the "lollipop" type or some other type that worked?  My question is, do you all have any suggestions on what medications would work as well or better than the oxycontin & possibly a very good BTP (break thru) medication.  AND do you know of an insurance and/or a prescription plan that is for individuals that might cover oxycontin or other meds??

I am not so worried about addiction right now b/c I don't "abuse" the drugs by overtaking them or looking for a "high".  Don't get me wrong, I know the potential for addiction and don't take it lightly, but also I am 29 & without the meds I literally can not see my children other than by laying down and them talking to me.  My disability was turned down through just filing it, which is common, but I have prob. the best disability lawyer in the area and they took my case easily & told me I had an excellent case, which they don't do unless they are pretty sure they can win b/c they don't get paid unless they do.  However, I've been off work for almost 2 yrs & my hearing for the disab. is not for 10-13 months, so I can not afford the oxycontin without help..  Any help is GREATLY appreciated..

Also, I have a degree in physical therapy so I know the 'treatment" throught PT, & can not get relief through it unless I can get my pain level down and even then it is not a large relief, but will take w/ever I can get...

Thx & hope this makes sense.. I know i rambled quite a bit..

^^ yes, oxycotin would most likley be the step up from oxycodone. It's basically the same medication but just in a more concentrated, higher dose. Depending on what pain you have, morphine may be an option.

OOPS - I was thinking you were talking about Oxycontin, which is the long-acting version of oxycodone.

Since oxycodone is a long-acting medication, other opiates in the same class would be various extended release morphine preparations like MS Contin, methadone, or the fentanyl patch.  Although methadone is a good long-acting pain med, there are some unpleasant side effects.  It tends to cause a lot of dry mouth and people have actually lost their teeth because of this.  It also causes you to gain a great deal of water weight and is one of the worst opiates to detox from if you ever get to a point that you don't need the meds any longer.

How did your doctor's visit go?
