Hello, my name is alisha I'm 24 yrs old. Married with 2 kids. Everytime I lay down on my stomach my head starts pounding my heart starts racing. And there is a ringing/heartbeat in my ear. I has happened for awhile. Now I'm starting to worry about it. Does anyone know why this happens? Thank you do much for taking the time to read this. I would appreciate any feedback.

Alisha1987's one and only post here on medhelp was in March of 2012. I doubt if she''ll return to answer your question.

This is why it is best to start a new thread here, with a subject like: Headache When I Lay On My Stomach.

I suggest that you consult your physician. While damage or disease to the upper cervical vertebrae can cause this problem, your symptoms may have other, more serious causes related to your vagus nerve and heart, or autonomic nervous system.

Only your doctor can make an accurate diagnosis.

Best wishes.

I was wondering if you ever got a answer for this. I have had this for the past 2 years and it only does it when I'm laying down on my stomach. I don't know if I should go to the doctor or not. I fell off a gold cart a couple of years ago so this has me worried. I never went to the doctor even though I should have. Thank you and I hope you can help. -Miranda

Hello and Welcome to the Pain Management Forum. I am sorry that you are experiencing headaches after resting. Thanks for taking the time to post your question.

I did some reading. on this subject. I found a site with suggestions from Dr Oz. Here's some of what is said, BEGIN Quote  "Misalignment during sleep can put stress and strain on the spine, neck, shoulder, hips and jaw which in turn affects how you feel the next day. It can also sabotage your ability to relax well enough to fall asleep." ........."There are 3 curves on the body that you should be paying attention to; 1 in the lower back, 1 in middle of your back, and 1 near the neck. The goal is to try to maintain these natural curves when you sleep." END Quote

If you sleep in your stomach Dr Oz's page said this: BEGIN Quote "Dead Man's Float. This sleeper spends the night prone, on his stomach, head turned to the side, with arms splayed under the pillow.
The problem - In this position you hyper-flex the neck and exert pressure on the nerves along the underside of your arms that can cause pins and needles and awaken you from sleep. The body's weight compresses the lungs, preventing a fully expanded deep breath. It also exerts unnecessary pressure on the breasts.
The fix - Don't use a head pillow at all. Try raising the whole side of your body slightly with a long pillow, or place a pillow under your hips." END Quote.

His article and others I read said there really wasn't a "wrong" way to sleep as long as you remembered the to maintain your natural spinal curves. Obviously your Physician's advice would over rule Dr Oz or anything I have to suggest.

Another article I read said Cervical headaches may be attribute to the upper three levels of the Cervical Spine.  It went on to say if you wake with symptoms (headaches)  that you didn't have the night before they can often be attributed to resting on an unsuitable pillow or laying in a position that does not follow the natural curvatures in your spine.

I don't know what may be causing your headaches, Sorry!!  It's always  best to check with your PCP.It may also behoove you to check your pillow and sleeping position.

I hope you'll keep in touch and let us know what you discover. We'll look forward to your updates.

Take Care,
~Tuck

Hi possibly due to compressing the neck. It is bad for the back to lay on your stomach so I would avoid it.
take care,
