Shocking

So I just got a call from my doctor's office confirming my appt tomorrow.  They then proceeded to notify me (with less than 24 hours notice) that my doctor's appt is going from $150 a month to $175 and that the roxicodone 30 I am prescribed and have filled at thier office has gone up to $6 a pill.  To spare you the math, my prescription (as it is, although he is tapering me down) would be $720!
My husband immediately called them back to ask why the dramatic increase in price (it was previously around $200) and if another pharmacy can fill it for a decent price.  They confirmed what we already know, that it's nearly impossible to find at any pharmacy here, and they said they assumed that the other pharmacies in the area the do carry it probably use the same distributor (which is the reason for the increase in price).  I am just floored!
I have, although, been wanting to talk to the doctor about switching me to something more long acting.  I am going to ask if maybe oxycontin with percoset for BT would work, or if not, something else.  I'm pretty sure my insurance covers MSContin and I think it covers Fentanyl.
I am just so shocked and dismayed and I'd like to know if anyone has some advice for me?
Thanks.

I understand your predicament..the price if meds is becoming ridiculous ..but be careful if you switch to oxycontin because if u have insurance they fight it because of the cost and if you don't have insurance the cost is huge for example. I get 60 80mg tabs a month and without insurance it would cost 1200.00 and now the insurance companies are making the doctors justify the meds or having them switch to methadone which I personally can not take....so just s piece of advise check beforehand so u don't get caught without .

I felt the same way about the reduction in medicine.  Immediately before this pregnancy I was pregnant and seeing another PM.  He basically kicked me out of his practice and recommended weaning down by one pill a week (which I didn't even have enough for), needless to say, I miscarried.
That's why I've been so upset and worried about this.  I went into the doctor's office, even though the phone is working again, I thought it would be best and brought the Endocet (Oxy10/325).  I told the staff what was going on and I was in tears over the pain.  The in-office pharmacist was there and he seemed very concerned about the reduction.  He came out and asked me if I had brought my medicine and he ushered me back to the doctor to make sure I got a similar script to what I was on.  He seemed very aware and concerned about the pregnancy side-effects.  It was really comforting.  They PM doctor is a former OBGYN, so I was a little disappointed that he would do such a drastic reduction, knowing all about the braxton-hicks.  It was a bizarre business, but the dilaudid seems to be working okay.  Making me a little woozy, but hopefully that will go away after a week or so.

I overheard him and the office staff talking about it and the receptionist said "I thought endocet and roxy were pretty much the same thing" and the pharmacist said "Nooo, the endocet is a lot weaker".  So I felt like I was in good hands there, as the doctor insisted the endocet and roxy were the same.
I should add that immediately before I went into the office I prayed that God would hold my hand through it all and he really did.
Thank you everyone for you kindness and support!  I don't know what a wreck I would be without this forum.

The much lower dose your on could make you go into labor. Please see your Ob when you go to see your doctor. When your pregnant and taking these kinds of medications it is crucial your weened down properly.
I think I had told you about my friend who was on lortab 10 while pregnant and she was cut off and she lost her baby. the doctors at the ER were so furious that she was taken off so abruptly and told her this is most likely why she miscarried.
I am really worried about the reduction in your meds. Please make sure you see your Ob and explain your dose was cut and how much!
Do not always assume this is Braxton Hicks. I do NOT want to scare you but with the drastic reduction be very careful!
When I sthe last time you seen your OB?

Please be very careful:)

So I actually did the math and the doctor took me off a regular dose of 120mg a day of oxycodone to 40mg a day.
When I finally realized this I was shocked and pissed.  I have been dealing with agony throughout the weekend and now my phone is turned off.
Sometimes I think if it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.
I tried tricking myself into thinking they're "just as effective", I've tried stretching them out, and last night I went to bed with ice on my neck/head and in tears.  I'm so afraid the doctor won't do anything for me and I've been having more and more braxton-hicks contractions.
This seems inhumane and unethical.  I didn't do anything to deserve this, my meds went up in price and my dose got cut by 3/4.  I think I'm going to drive to the office today.
Thanks for listening to me rant.

oxycodone 15 and 30 mgs are called "Roxycodone".  The thing about it is that he basically cut my monthly prescription by 2/3 and he seems to think that a percoset 10/325 is as effective as roxycodone 30mg.  I'm here to tell you that it isn't.
It does seem to last a little longer, though.
I guess the thing about it is that it doesn't kick in as strong, so you sort of have this mediocre pain relief for hours.  It's like it dulls the pain.
At least with the 30mg it would knock the pain out and I could heave a sigh of relief every now and then.
I think I'm starting to get used to it now, though
It's good that you can call around and ask for prices, and whether they have it in stock.  None of the local big pharmacies will tell you over the phone if they have it, they say they can't, and even my own pharmacy, Walgreens, claims they can't order it because they don't know when they'll get it in.  I've always been really good with my pharmacy.  It really irritates me that they act like their regular patients are going to find out the date of delivery and break in or something.  So ridiculous.

I just don't know the difference with all these medications.  What exactly is Roxicodone?  I had thought it was another brand of Percocet.  Maybe I'm wrong.

It is so scary to think of running low or running out of your medication at any time, but when you're pregnant, it must be so much worse.

I don't have health insurance at the moment. Luckily all my medications are covered by worker's comp.  But I did, just out of curiosity (and because there may come a time when WC will stop paying), call all the pharmacy chains and some independent ones around me to see the various prices I checked on oxycodone 15 mg. 120 pills.  One pharmacy would charge $37.88 and another $90.00 and there were all kinds of prices in between. That is a huge difference.

It angers me that people have to make a decision between medicine and other necessities.  There really has to be a better way.

Thanks for the sympathy everyone.  I don't know if they're open today, but I'm going to call them on Monday if they're not.  I'm trying to give it a try, and since he gave me about 8 extra, I took an extra one yesterday and that seemed to stop the withdrawlish feeling.  For instance, after I took the first one I started to get a rumbling in my stomach like diahrea (which I know is a withdrawl symptom) and my leg started to hurt like I remember GSW said happens to him when he hasn't taken his meds in a while.  So I took another shortly after that and it all went away.
I'm trying to give it a shot today.  My husband said that he felt the doctor truly believed what he was saying about them being almost as effective, but he also agreed he didn't understand the logic.
I took one this morning and I'd say it works about half as well.  I'm not in killer pain right now, but then I just took the medicine half an hour ago.
I'm really hoping it works because it would, indeed, help with tapering down.  However I can't imagine if I had to do much of anything because that's what sets off my pain.  I told the doctor so and he said "Well you're pregnant, take it easy".  I was like "I basically sit around or lay down all day, I don't see how I could take it any easier!"
I will try to call them today and see if they're open.  If not I'll have to do nothing until Monday and see if they will even do anything.  I've called before to tell them a medication wasn't working well and they wouldn't let me come in early, but I'm hoping they can give him a message reminding him of his offer of dilaudid and maybe, possibly, he'll help me.  I'm honestly thinking about looking for another doctor who sees pregnant women.  I feel like this doctor isn't treating me for pain, he's just prescribing people pills.

Wow. I'm so sorry that you are going through all of this. You don't need the added stress. I don't understand your doctor's logic at all. Even medically, it makes absolutely no sense. I'm not a doctor, but WOW. What is wrong with him? Maybe I'm wrong. Has anyone ever heard of a doctor saying that before? Is it possible that this is his way of having you taper down? If it is, then it's wrong, because he should be honest with you. Can you call him tomorrow and maybe pick up another script or even the dilaudid?

Hugs,

Well, here's how it went down.  Let me start by saying I broke down in the doctor's office when I started telling him about all the stress I'm going through.  We had to get a loan against my Martin guitar and my husband's Tag watch just to get to the appt.  I went in and told the doctor "I can't afford this medication and I can't afford to drive all over town looking for it either."  His solution?  "Percoset 10s work about 80-90% as well as Roxycodone 30s and they last longer."  I was like "There's no way."  His logic "A valium 10mg is equal to a Xanax 2mg"  I pointed out the obvious, "That's comparing two different medications, we're talking about 30 mgs of oxycodone vs 10 mgs of oxycodone".  No, he insisted they worked almost as well and, hey, they're only $1 a pill.  At first he offfered to add some dilaudid in there to help out, too.  I told him my biggest problem is that I know that if this medication doesn't work, I can call, but I can't come in for another 28 days.  He acknowleged that.  Then towards the end of the appt, my husband asked about the dilaudid, as he was printing out my scripts and the doc said "You probably don't need the dilaudid as you'll have a few extra of the percoset".  because he wrote 120 for a 28 day cycle.  So basically he replaced the roxycodone 30 with percoset 10.  I gave it a few hours and it's NOT working.
I'm just so upset.  My husband is like "At least you have something.", but I even started feeling withdrawl-ish after taking the second dose of percoset.
At least I have all of you who understand.   I'm sorry for rambling, but I'm writing this in tears.

I have been looking into ordering it off the Internet but the drawback is they require the paper script and if it gets lost then tough and also it would take too long to mail that in then wait to be processed your looking at atleast 10 working days( mon-fri).
I am so disgusted with this mess. I just talked to my pharmacy here in lake city and he said I can get 120 15mg oxycodone for 90$ So I may just switch to two 15's as that would be cheaper. I figure 90X2 is 180 and I take 5  30mg a day so I am thinking that is cheaper than 370$!
I hope I am not rambling!
Jaded I would check in your area too about this.
If you find a pharmacy that is on the up and up and not run by the pill mills they are cheaper I have found. My pharmacy is one that is very strict on narcotics and will not even fill if they do not know you!
Try some of the Pharmacies in Orlando that are legit.
The lower status the pharmacy has the higher they will be as they see the abusers and know they will pay whatever is asked.
If a pharmacy will accept insurance for your meds they are usually legit and run by strict standards unlike the pill mill ones,
They will be cheaper!

I know you can order online WITH a doctors prescription within the US - as a matter of fact, I occasionally get brochures in the mail from my insurance comapany (or form letters) telling me of that option. There are restrictions as to what can be ordered through the mail... not every drug is available.

Not sure about Canada tho.... I hear that people do it - but never met anyone who did.

After thought, that could possibly affect my suggestion of buying from CVS out-of-state. I'm not sure about this.

Does anyone have any idea if buying Narcotics online (with a Dr.'s prescription) is Legal? It seems like that would be crossing state lines. I'm just curious if you are even allowed to do it.

I have looked into buying other prescriptions from Canada, but not the narcotic ones.  It's probably worth looking into if it's possible.

The appt went okay.  I'm a little emotionally exhausted from everything so I'll come back later and give everyone the full update.

Thanks for your help and support!

I have a feeling you are already out the door, but just wanted to wish you well..

Has anyone ever looked into purchasing medication (legally with a doctors prescription) from the internet or Canada?

I am very confused when I search it online. However, if it were possible, the medication in Canada is cheaper.

Anyone?

I have no idea if I could order from another state.  One more reason I wish we were out there already!   I do think it's a state thing.  FL is a hot bed of medication diversion and I wish they would just give us all lie detectors or something to weed out the bad ones so that the good ones could get the relief we need..
My appt is at 1pm and I am going to be busy today because I need to get that address on my DL changed, and I need to come up with the money to pay for this appt. in the first place.
I am hoping there will be some other type of med that is comparable, longer acting med offered to me.  I'm really stressed out about it, and like I said, have only enough meds to get me through till 2 now.  I couldn't sleep last night and was just writhing around and in pain, so I had to take one half.  I should have called them earlier to let them know I was throwing up the meds.
Sherry, you're right and I had forgotten about it.  I may have had a brand that didn't agree with me.  Although the brand I had was the brand that works well for Sandee.
All of your thoughts and prayers for me will be greatly appreciated.  I'll let you know how the appt. goes!

Hey Guys,

I was curious about Oxycodone 30 mg here in AZ and I called CVS and talked to my Pharmacist. She said that the CASH price for 120 - 30 mg Oxycodone here at CVS in AZ is 167.00.

Do you think that this is a STATE thing?

What do you all think?

You know I remember Sandee had the SAME problem that yo did and that was she was throwing them up also. They had changed the formula and she was fortunate enough to get her pharmacy to get them from the original maker. I wonder if you had the same problem that Sandee did. That the new formula didn't agree with you.

I was talking about the mail-order pharmacies that the insurance companies will send you information on every once in  awhile. It may not help you right now but MAYBE in the future it might help price wise. :)

So sorry about all of this Sweetie.....Sherry

Thanks for all the sympathy.  Sandee, I hate to hear it, but I was hoping that things hadn't gotten so bad all over the state.  I know some people who went to my Dr. office said pharmacies in Orlando were cheaper, and I was hoping that was still true, but apparently now it's a state-wide thing.  How irritating.
I did check with my insurance and roxycodone was on the "preferred drug list", so I am wondering if I can find a pharmacy that stocks it, if insurance would pay for it, but that's a big bargain to walk out of the doctor's office with and if no pharmacy has it or the insurance doesn't pay for some reason, then I will be stuck.
My problem with a mail-order pharmacy, and having a pharmacy order it in, (Publix said they would do that before all this, Sandee), is that I only have enough left to last me through tomorrow afternoon.  Basically until my appt. where I usually would get my script filled and no problem.
Another problem with all of this is that I threw up at least 5 of my doses, probably close to 8.  I really didn't realize this until this week when I was looking at the bottom of the pill bottle thinking "Where'd all my medicine go?"  My husband mentioned me throwing it up and I initially said "That's only been once or twice" and he was like "Once or twice a week." and sure enough, looking back I hadn't even realized it.  So I had to stretch it thin over the past couple of days and I only have one pill total left, which I am saving to cut in half tomorrow mornign and afternoon.  It's all so stressful!

While you were gone, there was a stalker around who kept posting on my site saying terrible, very terrible things and the moderators had to get involved, this person changed her name like forty or more times and then I decided to change my name, sorry I didn't explain it to you earlier.  You missed a crazy time, but I'm glad that person is gone.
