Will my doc prescribe me more percocet?

So I have this spine tumor or you can call it neurofibromatosis type 1 and scoliosis..
the pain I am in right now is hell. can't sleep, can't eat, can't sit for too long. it's just hell for me.
my doctor prescribed me percocet on Nov 26 (60 pills) and I just ran out on Dec 15..
I'm going to go in and see him again on Dec 23.. will he prescribe me more percocet?
because I have appt with another doc (neurology doc) at John Hopkins on Jan 15th.
and will he give me more than 60 pills this time, because it's pretty long wait until Jan 15 for those who is suffer in pain like me.

Thank you

This is a very old post you're commenting on. It's best that you start your own post so you will get more answers.
I'm so sorry you're still having so much pain. Many Drs will only give you about a weeks worth of pain medication depending on the kind of surgery you had.
How many days worth of pain medication did your Dr give you? If the surgery took care of your knee problem it might not be a good idea to get any more pain medication. Some people can get dependent on pain meds very fast. Try taking Aleve or Advil to see if it helps. You might find that it takes care of your pain very well.
If the surgery did take care of your knee problem then I don't see a need to get in to pain management unless you're a chronic pain patient.
From what I know most pain Drs will not prescribe the first time unless you're being transferred from another Dr and have already been on pain meds for awhile.

I don't see why henwouldn't write you a script, especially since you already have an appointment.  If you only have four or five left, you should call today.  If you wait until tomorrow, there's a chance he may not get to it until Monday.  My pain management doctor wants me to call for the refill a full week ahead of time.  My surgeon and my primary care want 48 hours notice on refills.

A few years ago, I had called a week ahead.  I figured I'd have no problem.  One of the staff put the mail in her purse and forgot about it.  I didn't know that I was physically dependent.  I have never experienced withdrawals until then.  The withdrawals were horrific. Of course, at that time, I didn't know about dependency.  On Monday I called the pain doc and found out the scripts hadn't been mailed.  Thirteen people didn't get their prescriptions on time.  I figured out what was going on when I got the prescription filled, took my medicine and an hour later I was all better.

Good luck with your neuro appointment.  I don't think you'll have a problem getting it refilled. (Although, when a prescription is written "as needed, " it doesn't really mean as needed.  You still need to follow the entire instructions and not go over a certain amount.  Health insurance also comesminto play.  Even if the doctor refills it, if it's too soon, the insurance usually won't pay for it.  Sometimes they'll allow an overide for a vacation or special circumstances but sometimes they don't allow it and you have to pay out-of-pocket.  To get around that, some doctors will rewrite the prescription for a different pain med or will change the instructions by changing the milligrams or how many or how often you take it.)

I did not runout of percocet just yet but I have very little left (4-5 pills) and I'm still taking them as needed for pain...
the reason why I need more it's because I still have to wait until Jan 15 for appt for my neuro doc to see me.. and if I don't have any pain meds from now until Jan 15 then I would be in hell of pain..
so that's why I'm asking if I could get more before I run out of it..

I'm not familiar with the conditions that cause you pain.  But as a chronic pain sufferer, I can certainly relate to how pain can ruin a lot of things.

I won't reiterate all that Weathergirl stated, other than always take it as prescribed.  If it isn't working, make a phone call and find out how he wants to handle it. They may oncrease your dose, switch medications, or have you come in.

You need to have one doctor in charge.  Did you sign a pain contract?  If you did, go over it with a fine-toothed comb.  Some doctors are very strict and follow themcontract to the letter.  Others are a bit more flexible.  For example, when my primary care was doing the prescribing, she was very strict about the meds.    For any change she expects patients to follow it exactly, no room for any deviation whatsoever.  My current pain doc, in some ways, is not as strict.  He's told me that as long as I took the prescribed amount, it was up to mee to see how it works best.

Some doctors allow you to get pain meds from another doctor if it's something outside their expertise, while other doctors want to be the only one prescribing.  And it doesn't really matter how that's done.  What matters is that all doctors and you are on the same page.

You may or may not have to give a urine specimin, though no doctor i've seen had me do one one if I didn't have a contract.

If you think you'll need pain control for a long period or the rest of your life, it would be a good thing to get a pain management doctor involved.

ood luck at your appointment.  I hope you'll let us know how things go.

Sorry to hear of your pain.

This all boils down to what was written on your prescription bottle and whether he wanted the meds to last for 30 days. That is the usual amount of time a Dr. wants a med to last.

What is the dosage/milligram and prescription instructions?

So even if it said take 1-2 pills every 4-6 hours as needed. They don't expect you to take the max amount every day.

This is where it is IMPERATIVE to ask your Dr. I wish you would have called them as soon as you started thinking, "wonder how long these should last, or how many should I take per day"....and they would have clarified for you.

If it was meant to last until December 25th and you show up with none and they ask you when you ran out or even give you a urine test...no matter what you do at this point, BE HONEST!

And then from here on out, just be very clear about the instructions.

Also, what kind of Dr. is this that you are seeing and prescribing meds? If they aren't a Pain Management Dr., and just a Neurosurgeon or Neurologist, they may just be handling your "acute" pain and that was a one or two time deal and they expect you to find someone to handle long term/chronic pain if this is what you have.

Good luck.

If you have legitimate pain and a legitimate reason, I can't imagine why any doctor would deny you pain relief.  Why don't you call your doctor and explain to him that you have run out of medication and are still in severe pain?
Good luck - I hope you days are as pain-free as possible!
