Pain in the left side of chest ?

Hi, I'm 16 years old and I have been having pain in the left side of my chest for about 1 year now. The pain comes suddenly and sharp when I inhale or exhale. The pain starts when I'm sitting, standing or walking around the house. And all I can do is to stop in the position that I'm in, not to mention I have to hold My breath sometimes until its over. Ive never been sick in my life and I'm very healthy. I plan to go to the 2012 Olympic Swim Trials. Can somebody help me ? Any help would be much appreciated !

I've been having the exact same problem, I'm not in any sports though, and I have been having these "pains" for a year or more and in the past couple of months, there has been a dramatic increase in them... Have you found out anything?

Hello,
I am 19 years old, and what you described here about your chest pain sounds EXACTLY like what I have been experiencing for about two years now. I was wondering if you ever found out what your problem was? It would be greatly appreciated if you could help me in any way!

Hello,
Welcome to the Pain Management Forum at MedHelp. I am sorry you are having so much pain and at a very young age.

I was stumped until you said you swim. I would guess that you have strained, sprained or pulled a muscle from swimming. It sounds like you may be experiencing spasms. But there are no doctors on this forum and I am just guessing. But it makes sense to me.

What does your PCP say about your pain? If you have not consulted him/her I would recommend that you do so asap. Others will post with their ideas and suggestions. You may want to take a break form swimming and rest your muscles. Heat or ice may help to the area along with some NSAID's, with your parents approval.

I am impressed with your ambition to make the Olympics in 2012. I know it requires a lot of very hard work and dedication. Your parents have every right to be very proud of you. Best of luck in the Olympics and your search to find an answer to your pain episodes. I will be interested in hearing back from you as to what your PCP attribute these painful episodes. Take Care, Tuck
