question

i go to a back doctor for treatment and I signed a contract with him to only get meds from him, well last week I ended up having unexpected surgery for my gallbladder. I told that doctor what I was on and I didn't need pain meds from him. I don't know what happened but apparently he wrote one out and with out and I didn't know it. He gave it to mom. SHe didn't know about my contract with the other doctor and went and had it filled. I was so out of it I didn't know till the next day. I told her to get ride of it and explained why, so she did. My question is AM I going to be introuble with my back doctor when it was just a misunderstanding?  it was not intentual and they can UA to see if I took any of the other perscription.

I was lucky enough to have time before my surgery to tell my PMD that I was having the surgery and she told me too  go ahead and get his RX filled along with what she gave  me due to the fact that she only does my long term pain and not acute pain due to surgery. She said to just let her know what they gave me and take it along with my regular meds. Also they allow me to get other RX like if I have dental work just let them know what I was given and not try to hide it. Just talk to them cause more then likely they would have allowed the extra meds from another Dr due to the fact you have to take what they give you as prescribed and normally it wouldn't be anough after a surgery. throwing them out was not the right thing to do. but to late now. hopefully they will just give you a drug screen see you didn't take any and maybe have the DR who wrote them give them a call telling them about your surgery. As long as the Dr who wrote it knew about what you already had and he still wanted you on more then the PM Dr may let you slide. They know emergency's happen and lets say you brake your leg what are you to do sit there in pain or get more meds. Not all Dr are as understanding as mine but hopefully with you having surgery they will understand. And they may write you more meds for the new pain or tell yu to get more meds from the surgeon.

I agree with remar it probably would have been a good idea to keep those meds and take with you to your next appt. But beings you did not keep them there is nothing you can do about it now. The best thing is to explain to your dr what happened. I too have signed one of those contracts. Drs know when you get into a situation like having unexpected surgery that you are going to be offered pain meds. Truthfully just because you are on a regular pain med doesnt mean you dont need something extra in the event of a surgery. When my pain dr. implanted my neuro stimulator he actually wrote me a script for additional pain meds. He said I would likely need the extra boost. So they know it is at times nessacary. The important thing is to tell him what happened. And like you saud they can always test your urine. I hope all goes well for you. I know dealing with chronic pain is terrible. If you are like me you are sick and tired of being treated like a drug addict.

It probably would have been a good idea for the hospital Dr to have called your PM Dr to let him know your had surgery. Your back Dr may have given you extra medication for a few days.
Pharmacies will not take medications back but you could have taken the full bottle with you when you saw your back Dr. Throwing it away was not a good idea at all because as far as your Dr knows you did take the medication. No, I'm not saying you did. I'm just telling you what your Dr may think. Have you seen him since your surgery?
It was a misunderstanding, these things happen. Those contracts can be very strict though. It will be up to your Dr to decide if you violated your contract and if he will keep you as a patient.
I do wish you would have kept the full bottle and took it to your Dr. There would be nothing to worry about if that had happened.
It's a shame we have these new laws. Many people are getting surgery with no extra medication to take during their recovery time.

Just explain it to your DR you could have kept them. I have same contract and if you are not doctor shopping they understand people have surgery infact you probably needed a little extra
