Thank you for sharing the information about your sister. Would like to know what the recovery time frame  for that particular procedure. My chronic tailbone pain resulting from a  slip and fall at work. Sustained other injuries which have left me currently disabled and unable to work. But sitting is a "NIGHTMARE ' !!!!!

Do you have clinic that will take patients that have no insurance? There's one down here that takes patients who doesn't have insurance... they will only take patients that have no insurance only - they will not see patients if they have insurance. Do you have one in your area? I suggest you to call your hospital for referral and they might be able to help you. And I'm on it to google and see if there's a clinic in your area that takes patients with no insurance. When I do find one, I'll post here. :o)

Tuckamore, this information really helped me.  I have had the same kind of pain for more than 10 years and it effects my walking.  Sitting is the real problem and a cushion sure does help but as soon as I come off the cushion, wham, it's back.  Thank you so much for your clear and consice answer.

Hi Mary,
I am sorry you have tailbone (coccyx) pain. My sister suffered for years with this condition. She finally had a surgery at the ripe age of 28 to shave some bone and remove a spur. She still has pain but to a much lesser degree.

Pain in the area of the coccyx (tailbone) is called coccydynia or coccygodynia (or sometimes a variety of other spellings). Coccydynia can be anything from discomfort to acute pain, varying between people and varying with time in any individual. The name describes a pattern of symptoms (pain brought on or aggravated by sitting), so it is really a collection of conditions which can have different causes and need different treatments.

Coccydynia can follow after falls, childbirth, repetitive strain or surgery. In some cases the cause is unknown. The pain can disappear by itself or with treatment, or it can continue for years, and may get worse. It is five times more common in women than men, probably because the female pelvis leaves the coccyx more exposed. It appears that in most cases the pain is caused by an unstable coccyx, which causes chronic inflammation.

My sister uses heat to alleviate some of the pain but with heat comes blood and fluid to an area which can increase your pain. So on some days she alternates between ice and heat. NSAID's taking routinely can reduce inflammation. If you begin a therapy of NSAID remember to protect your gastrointestinal tract. Do not take them on an empty stomach. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is not an antiinflammatory. Also sitting in a "donut" cushion will ease the pressure on the coccyx. You shuold be able to find one in any medical supply facility or on the internet.

These measures may help you until you are able to see a physician. I do not know your economic situation but sometimes you can obtain public assistance to see a physician, even if it is for one visit. At least that is possible in my state.

I hope you will keep us informed of your condition and how you are doing. We are usually here 24/7, even it you just need to vent or chat.  Take care, Tuck
