I have the same problem. I believe I have rotator cuff. I went shopping I picked up a bottle of detergent it was heavy. Next morning my shoulder started hurting and I can barely raise my arm. This has been going on for four days. Anyone know how long does it take to heal? I tooked extra strength tylenol, no help. I tooked advil, no help. I tried creams, no help. My only symptoms is: moderate pain.

Hi Jack,

I am glad you found us at the Pain Management Forum of MedHelp. Welcome. I am sorry you are having shoulder pain. There are multiple reasons your shoulder can be painful. I am assuming you did not consciously injury your shoulder.

The shoulder is made up of three bones: the scapula (shoulder blade), the humerus (upper arm bone), and the clavicle (collarbone). The rotator cuff connects the humerus to the scapula. The rotator cuff is formed by the tendons of four separate muscles: the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis. These muscles raise and rotate the arm by pulling on the tendons. As the arm is raised, the rotator cuff keeps the humerus bone tightly in the socket of the scapula. The acromion and coracoid process are both protrusions of the scapula bone.

If you have pain when you raise your arm it could be related to the rotator cuff. Recently my friend had shoulder pain. She was diagnosed with a slight dislocation of the acromion process. You could also have a bursitis in the bursae of the shoulder. So there are som many conditions this could be I could only guess.

I would suggest ice or heat to the area which ever is more comforting along with NSAID's unless they are contraindicated for other reasons. Resting the shoulder along with the other suggestions may help. If in several days your pain is no better or if it becomes severe I would make an appointment with my PCP for a complete work up of the shoulder.

Best of luck to you. Please keep us updated and let us know how you are doing. I will be looking forward to your next post. Take care, Tuck.
