Why do teenagers become disrespectful?

Is it a right of passage of teenagers to think it's okay to speak rudely or roll your eyes at your mom?  I try not to allow disrespectful behavior but it still happens.  I used to be a saint and considered knowledgeable in my home.  Now, I'm not so smart and a pain.  And so many other moms of kids my kids age are saying the same thing.  Is this a stage?  What does it mean when very polite and loving kids turn into know it all teenagers?
