Can a vsd or asd reoccur after complete closure.

Hi, my daughter was diagnosed with a vsd and asd during her birth but thankfully after continious checkup for 2 years, the doctors said that both were closed completely. Now she is 6 years old  and from the past 2-3 days she has been complaining of pain in her chest on the left side. We are worried if the asd or vsd have reoccured and if the pain is due to any heart defect. Please let me know if a closed vsd and asd can occur again after complete closure on its own.

All babies are born with holes in their hearts; those holes generally close by the time the baby is a year old. Some do not and are found occasionally in adults. Once they are closed, they do not "reopen". There are VERY few things that cause chest pain in children, most are just muscle issues. As adults we hear chest pain, we automatically think, "heart"....we see people dying of heart attacks. Children are innocent of this stuff. It takes 20 years of eating junk food before the arteries of the heart start becoming clogged. In children there would have to be a VERY serious form of congenital heart disease to cause chest pain in a child your daughter's age such as a cardiomyopathy (diseased heart muscle) where the walls of the heart were stretched too thin or the walls were too thick to receive a blood flow to the heart. You would, more than likely already have had that diagnosis by this point. To be on the safe side, you should always have her seen by her pediatrician, he will then refer her to a pediatric cardiologist if he feels the need. Take care.
