Will my son need surgery, or will he be okay?

My son is currently 8 days old. He was born with a VSD hole in his heart measuring 6 mm in size. The cardiologist says that there is a 50/50 chance he will need open heart surgery. Today we went to see him again and again the same thing. I am sick to my stomach and terrified. Does anyone have experience with this? Does anyone have this heart defect and still live a healthy life without surgery? Has anyone had surgery shortly after birth? Please, need support.
