3 year old with back pain.

Hey I need some advise. My daughter is 3 and over 9 months ago she fell at the swimming pool and hit her head!back VERY hard off the tiled floor, so hard it left an imprint of the tile on the back of her head. She cried a lot but seemed fine, 5 days later she starts throwing up and screaming in agony with a pain in her head. Into hospital and she got a ct scan which showed no brain injury but she was probably concussed as I can see no other explanation for the vommiting and pain.

Since the fall she has been complaining of a pain in her upper back area. When she sits on the floor or sits for too long, and certain movements will hurt her!! I have taken her to my doctor on a few occasions who has finally referred her on to a ped doc. Today I got very worried as the past month or so she has been wetting herself, I figured it was laziness but the other day she said she doesn't know until it's coming. I read an article saying that injury to the discs can cause loss of bladder control.

My question is could a three year old actually damage her vertebra as the doctors doesn't think so. I'm worried sick and waiting for consultation will kill me. I will push for an mri when we see him but for now I need advice.

I must stress that this fall was a bad one as the floor was wet and she was running :( I could do nothing to stop it as parent are not allowed on deck of the pool and the teacher just let them run out after the lesson! I was livid!

Thanks in advance!

I'm so sorry you're going through this.

Although your daughter hit her head pretty hard,  it is a very unusual pattern for a brain injury to take 5 days to result in headache and vomiting,  so it seems like the fall may not have caused her symptoms especially since the CT scan showed no brain injury.  She "cried a lot but seemed fine" is usually a clear indication that she was indeed "fine".  Kids do bang themselves up and recover in a remarkable way.  If you said a few hours after the fall she was vomiting with a headache,  that's a completely different story.

I'm confused about your question about whether a 3 year old could damage her vertebra,  and the doctors saying no.  Obviously,  a 3 year old CAN damage her vertebra - that's beyond debate.  I wonder if your question was can a 3 year old suffer vertebra damage from a fall where there seemed to be no evidence of a head injury and symptoms didn't appear until 5 days after the event?  Was your question actually,  "could my child have suffered vertebra damage from the pool incident"?

I think you need to look elsewhere - besides the fall at the pool - to explain her back pain and loss of toilet trained behavior.

I do sympathize with your anger that you weren't allowed to supervise your child at the pool,  and she was allowed to run on a wet surface.
