What is wrong with my son?

My son just turned 11. He is obese and he has been since he was 4 and he has had asthma since he was 9 months old. In November of this last year he began to run a low grade temp and vomitting several times a day. We have taken him to the doctor 5 times for the same thing. Every visit, except for the last one, my husband took him to the doctor and they only discussed his weight, dismissing all of his symptoms. I took him in on Friday and demanded help. February is almost over and he is STILL sick. Every day, Every night. I am so scared and worried. He has missed 17 days of school since this began. The school is upset about him missing so many days and they MAKE me send him to school sick. They just deal with it as it comes. It is breaking my heart to see him like this.

He had blood work done in January and the only thing that came back abnormal was his white blood cell count but it wasn't outrageously high. On Friday, the doctor said she wanted to get an ultrasound of his gallbladder and then test how well it is functioning. If nothing is found, they will schedule a stomach scope. She added Zophran and Nexium to his daily medication regiment. (He is also on Singulair, Albuterol, Advair, and blood pressure medication. He has been on albuterol since he was a baby. He has been on the blood pressure medication for more than a year. They started him on Advair and Singulair in January, blaming his problems on his weight and asthma. If it is the asthma and coughing making him sick, why isn't he coughing or wheezing. We have dealt with asthma and coughing induced vomitting in the past but this is a whole other issue!) He is still vomtting and running a temperature. I have 4 children, two of which are older than him. I am not crazy! Something is so wrong! I think going the "gallbladder" route is taking up valuable time. What can I do??

Yep, we have to keep going for our kids.  Try a GI specialist for this immediate concern for another opinion.  Peace and good luck

The biggest hurdle that we face is that when you are over weight, everything that is wrong with you is because you are fat. I have dealt with this issue all of my life. That is unacceptable to me and we will move on to the next doctor. If being fat is the cause of every illness why do skinny people get sick? That sounds absolutely ridiculous. Most of the time, doctors will get an idea about what is going on and refuses to entertain any other possibilities.

Send you to see a psychiatrist? It was in your head? Absolutely not.

I am going to be a thorn in their side until they do what they should be doing. This has been going o for too long.

Those medications were added after the problems started. It was the doctors attempt at trying to ease his symptoms. I limit his sugar intake and sweets. Any snacks are fruit, yogurt, popcorn, or sugar free popsicles. I have 4 children and he eats what they eat but he just continues to gain weight. Not only is he over weight, he really tall for his age.

My opinion is that he is on too many meds and they are having side effects ..get a second opinion if you have to..May I ask what his diet food intake is as he is obese , does he get exercise when he is well of course. Maybe a change there would help a lot ..As i said I think you need another opinion form another doctor .good luck

No, you aren't crazy!!  You know your child better than anyone and obviously SOMETHING is going on.  I had very similar symptoms when I was in the 6th grade except that I started to lose weight.  Low grade temp, flare ups of vomiting, etc.  It turned out I had a duedenol ulcer from biliary reflux.  It took literally months to diagnose and finally an endoscopy was performed.  Before they found the ulcer, they were talking to my parents about my seeing a psychiatrist as perhaps the symptoms were in my head!  Nope.  I had an ulcer.

I would take him to a gi specialist.  Overweight or not, something is going on and you need to figure out what it is.  good luck
