One week ago my 6 yr old son and i visited another towns city park. After spending some time playing on various newer equipment, he climbed atop a rather tall, old metal slide. I cautioned him about how fast it would be compared to the less steep plastic slides that are more common these days.
He held his feet up so he could go fast but, not used to the speed, he failed to put his food down. He came off the end of the slide and hit the packed dirt hard. The landing was worn and slight bowl-shaped. It had no "give" as there was no mulch or other soft compound present. He immediately was out of breathe and reached for his mid back. I feel terrible for not noticing it didn't have a forgiving surface but with all the activity around, i suppose i was distracted because i would not have let him do it if I noticed.
Fearing compression fracture(s), I wasted no time, grabbing him up carefully and headed for the nearby ER. The doctor said the X rays came back negative. Releaved, i failed to ask what his thoughts were about what presented as the appearance of scoliosis. This was something the radiologist and i noticed before the X rays were sent for his review.
Although very guarded, he was able to walk out of the ER. He was sore the next morning so we stayed home from school and work. By that evening he was feeling pretty good. No complaints for nearly a week until tonight at bedtime he says "ive been meaning to tell you i cant lie on my right side because it hurts my back."
I wonder what's possibly wrong and if we should visit a pediatric chiropractor or ...?
