Faluire to Thrive

So my little one has been diagnosed with this.
A little background info he was eating 25-30 oz of breast milk at first and then he was introduced to formula. He still had 30 oz of formula out of no were he started eating 22, 20 then 18 till on Sunday he had 13.5 oz. That's when I said it was enough and we took him to the ER that day he had 16.5 oz and the following day he had 22 then he went back down to 16. Now he is getting about 24 oz daily but dr wants him to strongly be at 30 oz. While we were at the hospital I got to speak to a feeding team, lactation consultant and dietitian and they came to the conclusion that he wasn't having enough calories even with formula in his diet. We now have to make a 24 calorie formula.Anyways he will be five months on the 27 and he is weighing roughly about 13 lb 5 oz when the Drs want him to be at 20-25 lbs. All test came back normal and they don't think he has any other underlying conditions that may be causing him to not gain properly. He isn't loosing any weight but is gaining slowly.
I read the definition of "failure to thrive" and quite honestly I don't think my son fits the description besides the weight. He is a happy baby 99% of the time, hardly ever fusses or cries. All his physical and activities are on point with kids his age.

Have any other moms gone through the same and their babies caught up in the end?

I don't quite think he has failure to thrive, as long as he's gaining something, he is doing okay. Normally babies with failure to thrive don't gain anything or lose weight. My 7.5 month old is not even 20 pounds yet and she was born 9 pounds, so go with your instincts and don't always listen to the doctor. They read off of a growth chart anyways. Somedays babies eat more than others, especially while teething, growth spurt, etc. so I wouldn't worry too much unless his intake is extremely low and he's not having enough wet diapers a day. Hope this helps!!
