PCOS and Metformin

Hi all. I'm new to the forum. I'm 25 years old. Was diagnosed with PCOS, metabolic syndrome, and hypertension recently. My gyno prescribed me Provera to get me to have a period since I haven't had one since May 09. I can't take birth control because it caused me to have high blood pressure. I'm supposed to start Metformin after the Provera but my doc warned me about having severe nausea as a side effect. I'm very sensitive to medications so I'm wondering what everyone's experience was like when starting Metformin?

I have been on Metformin for about 3 yrs. I still get sick to my stomach and very loose stools and painful gas. Somedays I get no side affects and other days its unreal. Thought I would get use to it. I am on it for serveral reasons. No AF, cystic acne and to top it off type 2 diabetes.Since taken it,no skipped periods and no big cyst on my face, That last one is a blessing in its self.

have you noticed reductions in acne and hair growth now that you are on something to control your insulin levels? I have an apointment with an endrocrinologist this month and I'm hoping they will suggest metformin. Other than that, there is spironolactone but they told me they would have to monitor my potassium levels weekly to start. thats alot of blood tests I'd rather not have to do! I think metofrmin is my best option.

Mine was the same as the other ladies, a few loose stools the first day and then no problems, I have been on 1500mg for 8 months now and my cysts have shrank a lot.  I am pretty sensitive also so my doc put me on the extended release and i take it a night to avoid any side effects.  hope that helps, good luck!

I just started Metformin one week ago.  I too was warned about major side effects and was worried.  For the first two days I had loose stools a few hours after taking it.  Other than that, I haven't experienced any side effects.  Hopefully you will be just as lucky.
