I have almost always had irregular periods. And yes- I've had the brownish spotting, then bright red blood w/ clots.  My doc. initially put me on different hormones (I can't remember the names, it was in 2006) and it helped. Then the pill regulated my cycles a bit for a while.
I got pregnant in October of 2007, but miscarried in January. Then went back on the pill to regulate the bleeding. But recently- it got really bad again, clots..heavy, etc. And I'm bloated and swelling. So I had an ultrasound and bloodwork done on Thursday- no results yet.. PCOS messes with your hormones. We are also prone to cysts (which I suspect is why your doc scheduled an ultrasound)- I'd say try to relax and follow your doctor's instructions. Sounds like he's on the right track w/ the tests.

Good luck.
