41 and Pregnant with Twins

hi everyone, i am 41 and 9 weeks pregnant with twins via ivf. my re transferred 3 embryos on day 5. my appointments with the re have been going well...u/s look good, and i was just released to my regular ob this week. she says everything looks good too.

but i am very nervous. i have a 3yo that was conceived via iui. we did the amnio at 14 weeks, and he is pefectly healthy.

but now, i just turned 41 and well...i am just nervous, excited, scared...and just a bundle of nerves all at the same time.

we are thinking about doing cvs at 11 weeks. havent decided yet.

guess i am just looking to hear from some other women who are over 40 and pregnant, or who had successful pregnancies over 40 using their own eggs.

just need a little support from my friends here! .

i had the Mat21 test which i think is the same thing....or similar. the results were also normal. however, since i was having twins, they said that it was not 100% accuate, so we went with the cvs.

Have you discussed with your Dr the Harmony test? Its relatively new but very effective at picking up chromosomal abnormalities. Its a blood test that's picking up genetic markers from baby that are in your blood, so there is no risk for miscarriage associated with it.

i wanted to post back to everyone...i am the original poster on this thread. i hope this message give hope to other older moms out there. i just delivered healthy boy/girl twins at the age of 41. we did go ahead and do the cvs at 13 weeks, and both babies tested normal. right now they are in the bassinet sleeping soundly, and doing well.

we did ivf...got 13 embryos...transferred 3 on day 5 and ended up with twins. we also did icsi. i was 41 years old at the time of the ivf.

hang in there...it CAN happen.

take care.

I can totally understand your worries about chorionic villa sampling.  There is a risk of miscarriage.  Since you are pregnant with twins, they will have to take a sampling from both babies villi.  That means two different pokes and increases the risk of the CVS test.  It's a personal choice, of course, whether you want the test.

You could wait for the u/s later that can check for alot of abnormalities and blood work that tests for neural tube defects.  (Which when my daughter was pregnant, came back positive and nothing was wrong with her baby at birth)

You went through so much to get pregnant with these two miracles, I personally wouldn't take the risk of CVS, unless I was sure that I was going to terminate the pregnancy if something showed up wrong.

Pregnancy is your early 40's isn't the scary time that it use to be, only 20 or so years ago.  In fact, after getting know dozens and dozens on these forums of women that are 40+, I know of no mother that delivered a baby with any problems.  I will keep you in my prayers that you will know what is the right decision to make for you and your babies.  God Bless you.

Congrats on the twins!! I'm 38 and expecting our 1st after 9 fresh cycles of IVF. We had PGD done on our embryos so we declined CVS and amnio. I only had the NT scan and blood work. We decided it took 11 yrs for us to hold onto a pregnancy and didn't want any increased chance of miscarriage. We also felt genetic testing done on the embryos was good enough for us. I wish you the best on your CVS and pregnancy!
