Epidural??
How much of the pain does the epidural take away? I hear you can still feel a lot of pressure, but does that hurt?

I had a love hate relationship with my epidural. My whole pregnancy I wanted to go as naturally as possible, no iv, monitors only every half hour, no meds. I can't believe how wrong I was about it all lol. First I tested gbs positive, so I had to have an iv, then they couldn't get a continuous monitor on the baby so they had to break my water and attach one to his head, and then after being in labor for 30 hours I broke down and got the epidural. I really wish I would have done it sooner, it was a miracle. I went from being grouchy with pain to being able to smile and laugh and joke. I will tell you not to move the bed around though, I moved it a couple times to sleep and then chat with my family, and it ended up coming out, and the anesthesiologist was in surgery so he couldn't get back to fix it for three hours. Those were a brutal three hours. But once it was back in it was heaven again.
That's good to keep in mind. I'm GBS positive too, I found out pretty early in my pregnancy so I know I have to get an IV for the antibiotics. I was thinking about that the other day, like how would I sleep .. I have to sleep sitting 3/4 up in the bed on my back facing forward the whole time? Lol. I didn't think about moving around and the fact that it could come out. I'll sleep like a zombie if I have to. I'm glad to hear that the epidural worked for most people. Just about everyone I've talked to says the same thing. I'll try and deal as long as I can, but I think that's the way I want to go. We'll see. I'm 1 1/2 cm dilated as of today, so hopefully this weekend we can get this party started. LOL.. Thanks so much for the advice...

I had an epidural with two of my three deliveries. I felt no pain. The catheter couldn't have been that bad because I don't even remember them. Im planning to have one this this as well.. I'm old. I can't take any pain!
If you don't mind, did you end up having a C-section due to complications with the epidural? Like, did it slow your labor or were there other factors involved?
I had to get it because my body started shutting down due to the labor pain and when I got it, it took all the labor pain away I was even able to sleep. All the pain came back once they put the catheter in it was the most uncomfortable thing ever. I ended up having a c-section due to complications.

I'm afraid of just about everything as well. I work in the labor and delivery room at my hospital as a registrar, but it's so different when it's you in the room. I think I know too much. That's why I'm afraid.
I was given what they call a walking epidural I was supposed to be able to feel my legs but couldn't, I had to have a ccection because her heart rate dropped the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck twice and her chest. Had everything gone as planned I don't think I would have been able to push her out I couldn't feel anything
I felt nothing. I got it with my son.. I even started walking the same day. The catheter didn't hurt.. To me I just felt uncomfortable after they took it out for like an hour.. Best of luck and if you do get the epidural make sure not to move..
When i got it i felt nothing you do feel pressure and feel when you have to push but you feel no pain at all... they took it out right when the baby was being born and that same day i was walking.. i liked it because atleast i got a little rest before giving birth so i could have some energy haha. I'm using it again on this labor too.
My friend said you dont feel the catheter going in as you have the dreaded epidural and it only stays in 24 hours, i aint looking forward to c section the epidural or catheter either in fact im petrified lol
Every patient is different, some have all the pain taken away, some feel it more on one side then the other. Keep in kind, if your baby is positioning incorectly then you are extremely limited to help the baby move. That increases your chances of a c section. Also you will have a foley catheter inserted because you will not be able to control your bladder (and for fluid monitoring).
Ok good. I'm going to try and go as long as I can, but I'm leaning towards an epidural. Thanks for the advice.
I had it with my last two I'm getting it again with this one and you really don't feel anything I felt some pressure I guess but its not painful
I have it both my children. Only problem is that they ended up pushing Pitocin shortly after because I was dialating. I plan on not getting it this time because of the possible risk associated.
