First pregnancy at age 42

Hi Everyone,
I just joined the forum yesterday.  So I'm 7 weeks pregnant with my first child at age 42 after 3rd IVF attempt.  I'm so concerned as I don't know anyone who's had their 1st baby at 42 and I know there are risks (miscarriage and birth defects) but would love to hear any success stories.  Thanks!!

Well, he made a baby but that doesn't mean he still can.  Or that you can.  Trying to conceive is such a hard journey for many and I'm sorry that you've had to stress over this.  It gets harder as we get older (for men but particularly for women) to naturally conceive.  If you've never had a child, even more so once you've passed 40.  You really need to have a doctor help you.  You could try various methods like artificial insemination, IVF, etc.  But first they will run some tests on you and your husband.  If your husband won't, then he doesn't sound motivated to have another child which I'm sure is hurtful to you.  I hope he will try with you.  But call your ob/gyn and set up an appointment to discuss this and begin some testing to see what is going on and then get a plan. good luck
I'm sorry you found yourself here searching for answers. There might be different reasons for your trouble ttc. Firsty age provoking alongside issues. This might be female or male reason. And I'm afraid no one can tell you for sure what's going on. This post isn't aimed to make you upset or discouraged, but aware of things we cannot rule over. Here's my story. Together with ex partner ttc for 13 mons without success. He didn't want to see a dr even, so we soon broke up. I was left 38 yrs old and childless and hopeless. Then I met Mr Right. Now I'm 40+ they gave us no explanation apart from being old and fat why we couldn't conceive. Dh is perfect. So we spent another 12 mons ttc unless started to seek professional help. This time we made our mind around ivf . With this purpose moved to Ukraine. Passed there 2 shots. Currently am prego with baby#1. For me this whole journey is a long waiting game. Sums done, 13+12 mons is 2 yrs+ ttc naturally in vain. I do hope you're more lucky and after some investigations done you'll soon conceive on your own. But please do visit your dr and tell him all your worries. He'll definitely have things to recommend in your particular case. Wishing you the best!!

I am 42 and 10 weeks 4 days pregnant naturally !!!!! This is amazing for us because in the last 4 years we have gone trough 2 failed iui , 2 Ivf that ended in miscarriages an a natural miscarriage in between the ivfs. Two doctors told me my odds of  getting pregnant were less than 5% with Ivf however  I got pregnant twice "naturally" since then .  I was preparing for a lasts Ivf attempt and we got this big wonderful surprise !!! This pregnancy is the longest I have been pregnant and I'm sure I will have our baby in my arms alive this time .  I was so depressed recently when I turned 42 as I saw my chances slipped away , not knowing few weeks later I will get a positive test .
What I did ? I did everything I could ! Biking, meditation , acupuncture , organic and fertility food and some homeopathic  injections from Germany called gynecoel which help harmonize hormonal balance . I don't know which one worked but if may have been a combination of everything

Just Keeping the thread going and flame of hope burning. I wrote 2 months ago the a naturally got pregnant and just update. Am still pregnant and so far everything going well and am in my third trimester now. Am an active person and my doc is happy with progress that she told my hospital that I did not need to be on weekly u/ s after 30 weeks coz I did not have a problem pregnancy (honestly I hated the high risk label on my hospital forms). Yes ladies we have a higher risk for miscarriages during the first trimester and conception is not easy BUT once those 2 hurdles are passed our statistics are good. Downs syndrome issue is across age groups and I have read many pple in the younger cohorts having same issues and occurrences. Yes we can!

Hi Everyone:
I'm 40 and am 7 weeks tomorrow!  Happy birthday little blueberry!

After being off birth control for 2 years with nothing happening I decided to google my life away for natural remedies for increasing fertility.   I don't know if it was a combination of clearing my body of some negative childhood trauma via EMDR or the concoction of natural herbs I took, but I got pregnant 1 month after I started taking the herbs.  My baby's heartbeat is strong and I feel great (although tired).
I recently broke up with the father in the most horrible way, but I process the feelings and move on.
And I talk to the little blueberry every day and picture myself holding the him/her in December and let no negative thoughts come to mind.

Yes, I'll have the testing necessary to ensure a safe pregnancy and delivery, but it's so important to keep your little body healthy and stress free.

The concoction I took was:  Royal Jelly (pure .5 teaspoon), Spurlina (3000 mg), Primrose Oil (1 capsule), Maca Root (2 capsules) and Propolis.

I also stopped taking Allegra (allergy meds) as I read that it can cause a woman to stop ovulating.

All of this can't hurt!  It's worth a try!

Happy baby making ladies.

Hi Keri

I am sorry about your miscarriage. We are in the same situation. I'm not sure if you checked my profile, but I also had a m/c (Nov). I had a d/c the day before I wrote the comment above. I just wasn't ready to talk about it at that time and the person that posted the original question was asking for success stories.

So I have been trying since Sept. 2012. I just started to temp even though I told my self I wouldn't in fear of becoming obsessive. But, then I thought that I would like to know when I ovulate and I also thought that graphing the temps would give me a picture of whether I had any problems.
I only take prenatal viamins. Do take any supplements?

Hello tootsie748, I turned 41 today and I have not had a problem getting pregnant. I had my first at 31, my second at 36 and I was able to get pregnant for the third time at 40. My periods are regular and I ovulate with all the signs necessary to predict that the time is right to conceive.

It is surprising to me that your doctor 'frowns due to statistical risks' and she shouldn't be surprised that you are doing so well. My OB doctors are optimistic about older women becoming pregnant, but they do want women to know the statistics and risks as with any woman regardless of age. One doctor shared with me that her mom had her at 43.

This is a topic that I will be doing more research on.

Good luck!

I have known so many ladies who had healthy babies after 40--as late as 48--naturally!! But, I know that many frown upon this, even if it is totally natural and the baby is born to a very secure and prepared mother, who is more than ready! ;-)

I'm somewhat stunned that I still have perfect ob/gyn check-ups and 28 day easy cycles at age 42!  Did all of you still show signs of ovulation and no peri-menopause?  Or was it more of a catch as catch can with your female system?  I feel like I could easily pull it off, which totally surprises me.  Even my perfect check-ups seem to blow away the OB/GYN.  In fact, she frowns due to statistical "risks,"  but says my health is perfectly fine. I've known a lot of women with many fertility problems in their 30s, but I'm not too concerned.

Have others had this experience?  Being discouraged due to your age alone (not health)?  I was not in the best personal position to have children before, but now it seems viable.  Last chance???....

Please let me know if you also seem to have super-ob/gyn status??...And does that all make it easier?!  I don't know why I'm such a procrastinator, but you can't predict your whole life!! :-)

I am currently 43 years old I will be 44 on november 21 2009. Last year June I got pregnant after doing 3 IVF attempts. In March this year I gave birth to a beautiful , healthy baby girl, and she is wonderful. There are high risks at the age of 40 or over but you will be given special care such as seeing aperinatal doctor so that scans can be done and tests so that you would be assured if everythign is alright.

I had given up after the age of 35 years and completely lost hope at the age of 40, Then I said to myself that I did not give it a good shot maybe after IVf then I can completely give up. But after attempting 3 IVF cycles, I told myself that miracles do happen. Soon i would be attempting another iVf so that I can have my second child.

So hope things work out for you. Good Luck

Hi There,

All your comments have been wonderful to read.  I am currently going through a divorce.  One of the reasons is because I wanted a second child.  I already have a wonderful little boy, age 4.  I am now 40, turning 41 in December. I  would still love to have another child one day but odds are looking slim.  I am now feeling hopeful regarding my age and that I may have time to turn my life around.

Hello All,

Thank you for your comments and support!  I went to the doctor today and my ultrasound looked great!  I'm 8 weeks and the heartbeat is very strong!  I know I'll need to stay positive, although I'm a worrier by nature :)  Thanks again; all of your comments have calmed my fears..

I had a child at 42--my third--and I am going to have another child at 46 this year. My pregnancy at 42 was a breeze--the most incredible little boy. I did have a CVS test done (more bleeding after this than I expected--which was the only time I felt anxious). So while I did not have a first child at 42, it was 22 years after I had my last child. Congratulations! I wish you all the best. Enjoy pregnancy and motherhood, every minute, because the time goes by so quickly.

Hello and welcome to the forum!  I conceived naturally with our first baby at 42, delivered at 43.  Currently I am 45 and 22wks pregnant with #2, naturally as well.  Although anything can happen at anytime for a 42yr old or a 22yr old, try not to worry about miscarriage.  There are risks at being over 40 and having a baby, but as Lisa and Tricia said keeping a positive attitude and know that there are many success stories that account for women over 40 having healthy babies and carrying to term.  You will have the option of having prenatal testing throughout your pregnancy to monitor the development of your child if you so choose. In the meantime, try to relax and enjoy your pregnancy. When is your first drs appt and u/s?  I wish you well, and keep us posted. Pam

Hello and welcome!
I concieved at 40 and gave birth to a healthy girl 4 years ago at 41.  It was my first pregnancy.  I am 6.5 weeks now at 45.   Personally I know many woman who have had GREAT success with first pregnancies over age 40.  One of our CL had her first child at 43.  My friend became pregnant for the first time at 44 with IUI and had a healthy son.
There are higher risk after 40, I know this fact well, but being positive is really important so take one day at a time and relax and enjoy your pregnancy!

Well, first off let me say CONGRATULATIONS! You must be so excited! I know there are quite a few women here (Pam, Lisa???) who have had their first babies in their forties. I'll be 41 in July and I'm 22 weeks pregnant...but it's my third. (I had my first two at 22 and 31 years old). So far, so good, though! No problems, no issues. Basically, it's been very easy and uneventful. I'm hoping for the same for you!
