measurement not adding up

Hey all,
I come here quite often but don't post much.  I am 41 and trying for my third child.  I have had 2 miscarriages over the past couple of years.  My last cycle started April 28 and we tried a Clomid challenge.  Luckily we got pregnant and found out my numbers were really good.  Doc says I have plenty of reserve.  We went in for my first ultra sound at 6 weeks.  Discovered 2 sacs.  One was empty and did not look viable.  The other had a yolk sac(measuring aound (4.2-4.4weeks) and doc said it was just too soon to tell.  Went back today at 9 weeks and still 2 sacs.  One empty and large.  The other had a little fetal pole with wings and a fast little heart beat.  Tech said it was measuring 6.5 weeks.  Doc said heart beat is good, 95, and considered viable.  I am really confused as to why I am measuring 2 weeks behind. Not positive as to when I ovulated.  I have never tested positive for a surge with the fertility strips.  Not sure what to think.  Can this turn out ok? Am I headed for ANOTHER miscarriage?  Is this a sign of a DS or another abnormality? Am I crazy to think I can do this at 41?  Sorry for the whining.  I would love to hear if anyone has had a similar experience and how it turned out.  Much Thanks!

Just wanted to follow up.  Went in for an ultra sound last Friday and we could not find the heart beat.  Doctor was able to fit me in that afternoon for a D&C.  I'm sad but doing good.  It's so hard after you see that little heart beat.  Thank you for all your responses and support.  I greatly appreciate it.  I want to give it one more try after my cycles go back to normal.  So, I'll be back to the  boards soon.

Thanks Again!

I was on clomid for a few cycles and there is no question it changed my cycles...quite dramatically actually.  I use ovulation predictor kits and typically ovulate around day 13 to 14.  I wasn't getting positives until day 16 or so, so probably wasn't ovulating until day 18.

You know, your story made me think of something that recently happened to a co worker of mine.  She was absolutely certain of her dates.  Her first ultrasound though dated her at 6 1/2 weeks instead of 9 1/2 weeks.  There was also a healthy heartbeat.  Well, she gave birth last week to an amazing little boy on what would have been her due date had she been 9 1/2 weeks at her first ultrasound.  He's perfectly healthy and beautiful.  Honestly..you have a heartbeat, growth, no bleeding or any sign of loss.  I am betting this all works out just fine.

Thank you for your responses.  I do find the heart beat and growth very encouraging. I am wondering like you if my dates are off.  It was my second round of clomid taken days 5-9.  I am wondering if this put off ovulation until later in my cycle.  That is the only thing I can think of. I have never had much luck with the fertility strips.  I am obviously ovulating.  Since my miscarriage last November, my cycles were a little off ranging from 25 days to 35 days.

Thanks again and I'll keep y'all posted.

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

About gestational age: Gestational age based upon your last menstrual period (LMP) is based on the assumption that a woman’s cycle is 28 days and she ovulates on Day 14. The thing is, most women don’t follow this pattern and sometimes it is WAY off. If you ovulated later than Day 14, your baby is not as old as your LMP suggests.

Adgal is correct, having a normal heartbeat is a great sign. The fact that your baby is growing is another great sign :)

Is it at all possible you are off on your dates?  Here is the thing...ultrasound dating in first trimester is pretty accurate.  I will say in all honesty that dates being that far out is typically not a great sign.  However, having a heartbeat is a wonderful sign.  That combined with the fact that there was so much growth in between are all very good things.  I wouldn't say you are destined to miscarry at all.  In fact, with a normal heartbeat, your odds decrease dramatically.  How long are your typical cycles?  Perhaps you ovulated and implanted very late?  I don't know, if you are certain of your dates this is perplexing, but it sounds like things are going well.  Keep us posted, and congrats on your pregnancy.
