High PAPP-A result

I had the double test done at 12 weeks [Blood work and Nuchal fold screening] and got my results back this week. The Down's risk result came back at 1:13000 which for my age [34] as I understand is quite good.

I am living in Turkey and the doctors tend to be quite alarmist here. The Nuchal fold result was fine, as was the HCGb result, but the PAPP-A result came back a little high, and the doctors started talking about Downs and further tests etc [triple test and amnio]. By my understanding the Downs risk result is calculated from a combination of blood work and the nuchal fold result? Surely if there was anything of any major concern my Down's risk result would have been a lot worse. I heard in the UK they dont even offer you further test unless your result is 1:250 or less. Also according to all the websites a low PAPP-A result can indicate Downs syndrome but I have been able to find no information as to what a high PAPP-A result is a marker for?

Does anyone have any advice, as I feel that they may have scared me unnecessarily, and that perhaps further tests are not really required.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

My papp-a result was very high in my double screening test (7 mom). The doctor freaked us out! She was concerned about Nooan Syndrome. There are no indicators other than high PAPP-A level. Amniocentesis will be carried out. We are so worried.. I urgently need your advice and experience. Is there anyone who also had high papp-a levels? What have you gone through?

Wow, with a 1:13000 test for Down's and they're questioning? I would have fallen off my chair with those numbers!! That does seem more "alarmist" than the States, anyways. I can't even remember what mine was now (how sad is that because it was something I was so worried about) but I think mine (for being 40) was 1:250 or something...it could have even been much worse. I even declined amniocentesis as I just decided I would not terminate the pregnancy and would love this baby no matter what. That's just me, though.

I am curious what you find out and, unfortunately, don't have any better answers for you. I hope you will post back when you do find some more definitive answers
