Missed NT scan, Down syndrome positive 5th month scan normal..need amniocentesis?

Hi
We missed NT scan for my wife as she was taking care of her sick old mother during the third month. Then we were asked to do normal Doppler and down syndrome triple marker. Trisomy21, 18 both came positive. Doctors asked us to wait for 5th month sca. The resukts of 5th no th scan are all ok structurally. The doctors now say that amniocentesis or NIPT test only will reveal any abnormalities. Can we rely on these tests? How far they are true. Has anyone given birth to normal children despite positive result from NIPT or Amniocentesis too. Please advise.

From what I know NIPT gives you the percentage chance to any genetic disorders.. it's not a definitive option. If those test show high chance of such disorders then you do amnio which is quite precise, but nothing is 100% sure. There are false positives all the time, as amnio is 98% precise

Gosh, this is such a personal thing. I forgo testing because I was not influenced about the pregnancy, I wanted it regardless. I wanted to be stress free and knew we'd handle whatever came (other than basic ultrasounds). There are so many false positives. I was an older mom and was taking my risks. So your 5th month scan was fine? No issues? And because of the early scan results, the doctor is requesting amnio? I could see NOT doing that but don't know what the feelings of your wife and you are. It's now September. I would LOVE an update to hear what you decided and what the results were if you did it.

Hi Specialmom, Thanks for replying. We decided not to go for either or the tests. We had 4th to 8th month scan report now. Our doctor said that there were no soft markers so far in the scan reports. She has assured us not to be worried. We too are hoping for the best. I will keep you posted during December. Thanks again for responding.

Regards.
