Results back,I just needed to share this.....

I needed to share this with all you lovely caring people on here.
I am  just over 15 weeks PG and going to be 45 years young LOL next month.
My blood results came back today which put my DS risk up to 1:60.
My nuchal scan results last week was 1:85.
I have made an appointment now to have an amnio next wednesday.
My doctor highly recommended that I have this done because of my age and these results.
I am really afraid about having this done but feel now I need too for peace of mind.
If any one would like to share with me their experience with having an amnio I'd appreciate it very much.
I know everyone is different but does it hurt......and what am I to expect.
I have looked at a few sites on the net for information about amnio's but find this the best site for real life experiences that we all are quite open and honest and ok to share.
Thanks,Erina

hi! I had an amniot with both of my pregnancies. it's definitely uncomfortable but not super painful and ti's over within a couple minutes. I'd say it compares to getting your nose or ears pierced pain wise.

Your odds are actually very good! :) it's a bit higher than my risk but only by a few numbers.

Hello Erina,
Deciding whether or not to have an amnio is a difficult and personal decision.  I have had two amnios and had very similar  and good experiences with both.  My first pregnancy (at 37) we had several blood tests ( can't remember the test names now) where they give you a ratio.  I can't even remember the numbers (now looking back they weren't even than bad) but it put so much doubt in our minds that I knew I just had to know.  I felt like the stress of the "what if" was worse for me and the baby than just getting the amnio.  For us it was purely a matter of being prepared and not having to worry (over that one thing.. there are so many other things to worry about) My first amnio went fine.  I nearly squeezed my husband's hand off but out of fear not pain.  I felt barely any pain, just a small poke and it was VERY quick. It feels a bit like a shot to the belly.  They have an ultrasound going the entire time to make sure that the baby stays clear of the needle.  I cramped a bit during the procedure and a bit later that day but that was it. I was really scared that I made the wrong decision and that I would m/c or something bad was going to happen as a result of having done the amnio. Test results came back that she was fine and I have to say that I worried A LOT less for the rest of my pregnancy knowing that all was OK in that area.   I now have a wonderful and very healthy 3 year old daughter.

I'm currently pregnant at 41 and with this pregnancy we decided to bypass the ratio type tests and went straight to the amnio.  I had a very similar experience in that it was not overly painful and was really scared this time too.   Thankfully, all is fine with our little boy who is due in 6 weeks.
Good luck to you.

I did not have amnio, but I did have a 1:39 risk of Downs, and my little girl is a second grader who does not have downs! Those numbers are meaningless.  Wait on your amnio, and I wish you great results and quickly.

Thank you all so very much for your comments.I feel alot better now in having an insight of what to expect now.
I don't know of anyone {friends etc..} that have had an amnio before so it's frightening for me but I'm sure everything will be just fine.
So I'll be brave and see how it all goes on wednesday and I'll make sure my DH keeps and eye on everything.
I'll keep you all posted and let you know how I'm doing.
Thank you for your support and kindness.
Erina :)

im 38 and had a 1:3 and her nuchal fold was 5.4.   i think your fold sounds good!  i also had to know if she had down syndrome, i felt i couldnt be at peace until i knew and was prepared.   i had the amnio, and she does have ds.  it made it easier for me, even though i was keeping her either way!

i will be honest, i passed out! haha not from pain, i was horribly overwhelmed that day and really let the stress get to me.  it was uncomfortable, but not painful.  it just takes a very short amount of time then you go home and rest for 24 hours.  a pass to lay on the couch and have dh wait on me?  heck ya!

dont be afraid, your baby will be perfect if he/she has ds or doesnt.  try to relax and know it will be ok, and i hope your results come back fine.  im due in 3 months and i have enjoyed my pg much more knowing all i can about my baby girl beforehand.

Hi NZmum3,

I'm 41 and am 22 weeks pg with my first. We had a high risk chance of DS after our nuchal screen 1:6.  The sonographer said that at my age, going for the blood screen and also the 2nd trimester quad screen could only slightly improve my 'score'. He highly recommended I go for the amnio. I saw my OB after and he recommended it too - said that the risk of m/c was lower than the chances of having DS ( 1 in 200 or 1 in 400 ).  We did the math and figured we had a 14% chance of DS vs less than 1% of m/c so. Reluctantly still - we booked our appointment.  I wanted to avoid the amnio - was scared of the pain, and m/c'ing and mostly the results - personally did it for our peace of mind.

At week 15,  a sonographer checked the baby's heartbeat and I got some u/s pics - and found out we're having a boy. Then my OB came in and he gave me a play by play of what he was going to do. I didn't watch him - kept my eyes on the screen instead. He told me when he was going through the abdomen - and I felt a light ***** - didn't hurt. Then he paused and said he was going to go through the amniotic sac - felt it more ( quick light jab ) but, not painful.  Little bean scooched towards the needle to check out the action but, the needle was already withdrawn once entering the sac.   Liquid was drawn out - again, no pain just a real light "sucking out" sensation and that was it.  The u/s gel was wiped off and I was on my way.

Had a little cramping after but not a big deal. Cramped when I was walking out the long corridor and at home on the stairs.  Best to take it easy for 3 to 5 days - no heavy lifting.   You know, the fear that builds up during the wait before the amnio was worse - I had 4 weeks to imagine all these scary scenarios.  We were told the wait was 3 to 4 weeks but, happily got our good news 2 and a half weeks later.

Alot of women 40 + have gotten bad scores at the first screening and end up having perfectly healthy babies.  The triple and quad screen are only estimates. Amnio is a personal choice but, you'll get definite answers.  Good luck to you - we'll be looking to read your happy news soon.

I am 41 and had a risk of 1:2 (yup...50% chance for my son having downs)
Many women had low numbers like me which all turned out fine (Adgal had 1:16 and had a a healthy son recently)

Also, my NT scan results were horrendous. I did the amnio (a little cramping but no big deal). My son was fine chromosonally, no defects.

For me, it was peace of mind and if he did have downs, I would be able to have a chance to research support groups, etc and prepare for his birth.

You actually have great numbers but amnio is a personal choice.

Hi Erina, I hope all goes well for you and your little one. I am 36, I chose not to have the amnio because I felt it would have me stressed the whole pregnancy. No matter what the test showed I knew I would not end my pregnancy so to me I was like, what is the point in knowing if there is a problem? I ignored my doc. I know alot of women who have been told the results came back showing the poor babes has all kinds of defects and then they are born healthy and beautiful, problem was, mommy spent the whole pregnancy worried and stressed out thinking her LO had clob feet, down syndrome etc.....Lots of women have babies your age and they are fine, you and your LO will be fine, your angel is a blessing. Take care and congratulations.
