I'm 41 with my first pregnancy, I was hoping for twins but I've just got a singleton. Naturally conceived, by the way.

I'm 36 and me and my husband conceived twins, we just found out our girls are identical. And the odd thing is twins runs in our family, but it Skip three generations. I have eight siblings and my husband has five, no one has twins. So what I'm trying to say is, twins are not by genetic it's by chance and identical are indeed spontaneous. Our girls are conceived natural, after two miscarriages.

The odds if you do conceive are weighted slightly more towards having twins than they would be if younger but the chances of getting pregnant in the first place much less.  So the numbers of twin pregnancies are higher overall (non-ivf) in younger women(they have more babies than us!).  The chances of having one baby rather than twins for any woman at any age are much higher.  So if you are pregnant (non ivf) you are much more likely to have a singleton (even with twins in the family).

There is a massive increase in multiple births over 35years because of putting more than one embryo back in ivf, and a proportionately tiny increase in rate of natural twins for older women who manage to conceive without. eg I think everyone was right  :-) best of luck

Wow, thanks, ok
So I was asking about the risk or chance at twins at or increasing by or at age 35.
By natural method and no medication. Yes my fateher was a twin and my sister has twins. My husbands brother he and his wife have twins.

Again thanks for your responses!

I had heard this, too. Plus, I had read that yams increase your chances of conceiving multiples. I am 36 & my husband & I conceived right around Thanksgiving (when I had eaten a lot of yams) so we were a bit relieved when our first ultrasound showed only one baby.

I'm 35 and I was hoping for twins!! I have one fallopian tube so unless they are identical or I'm shooting two eggs out the same tube I think I'm out of luck lol. Good luck if your wanting twins!

It's true. I'm 38, have no history of twins in my family or many husbands and I'm having twins.

I apologize then, I was just reading the other day that as maternal age advances the chances that the eggs released will be viable for fertilization decreases. That's what I was basing my response off of.

Actually knufrio that's not true, the chance for a pregnancy to result in naturally conceived twins does increase with advanced maternal age. As the body gets closer to menopause the ovaries are more likely to release multiple eggs at ovulation instead of just one, it's been proven by countless medical studies. Identical twins happen by chance and nothing increases or decreases the chances for that happening, but fraternal twins are definitely more common in older mothers.

More mammas over 35 do have twins but it's just because of the increased number of women who got pregnant through IVF. If you're going to have natural twins the chance actually goes down as you get older, since your overall chance of conceiveing is lower

This is true.  I have no history of twins in my family.   I got pregnant with twins one week before turning 35.  I ovulated on two sep days within one week,  which is apparently more common when you get older.   I'm also a tall black female, which I was told also increases the odds.  Good luck to you.

I've never heard that before. Do twins run in your family or did you conceive through ivf?
