My OB said that as long as I was not short of breath then I was likely not compromising my blood flow when on my back - I was most comfortable on my back when sleeping.  What I did to make things safer was to try to sleep on my left side as much as I could, followed by my right side, but because I would invariably wake up on my back, I kept a small wedge pillow (Boppy makes one) halfway behind my back - this way, even when I was on my back, I was not flat on my back (I was tilted slightly).  I had no problems with my pregnancy and my son is very healthy.

Your Descending Aorta runs along the back part of your abdomen, carrying blood to the lower part of your body, including most of your abdomen (and your developing baby). As the baby grows and your uterus expands, a back lying postition can compromise blood flow by putting pressure on it. Doctors generally recommend that pregant women sleep on their left side to maintain optimum blood flow.

I have been told that sleeping on the left side allows better blood flow around the body... something to do with the Aorta ???

I sleep in whatever position I can...lol
I know they tell you to sleep this way and that but...if you aren't having severe stomach aches or problems breathing, then by all means continue until you can no longer find comfort in that position.
I think most doctors are afraid that the weight of the baby etc is going to cause breathing problems for you.
Maybe put pillows under your back so that the baby isn't squishing your stomach up into your lungs and heart.
The only one that kind of makes sense is when they tell you not to sleep on your stomach...but then again...the baby is surrounded by water for a reason right?
