Contractions or not. need some help

So today marks 40 weeks and my due date all night I had period like cramps and back pains. Both of which are getting more intense and not going away. Are these contractions I have nothing to time because they are never ending and pain does not come or go. The pain reminds me of cramps u get right before your due for period. Can anyone help me out with this?

Thanks for the tips I been trying to rest as much as I can. My doctor told me until they r down to 5 mins apart then call them I was just not sure how to time right now when they never leave. I guess I have to wait to progress more. So excited to meet my little baby girl soon.

If uve been having period like cramps all day long, then I would consider going to the hospital today get checked out.  I was in active labor for maybe 2-3 hours before I went to the hospital and my contractions went from 10-15 mins apart to 4-8 mins apart, but the contractions were very intense.  By the time I got to the hospital, everyone in L&D said I was in very active labor and I should've came 2 hrs ago.  Needless to say, I was 8-9 cm dilated and all this time I was worried about being sent home cuz my contractions weren't a consistent 5mins apart for at least an hr.  Oh, and I was stopped in my tracks, but was able to "talk".  I guess my pain tolerance is pretty high, but if we decide on a 3 rd baby, I will def not wait as long as I did.  Goodluck!!

This could be the starting of labour. Just stay calm and rest. When the pains start coming in waves you will be able to time them. My midwife told me that untill you can't talk throught them and they are 5 mins apart and 1 min long there's no need to be seen by a doctor. Unless your doctore has told you otherwise.
Rest try to sleep, eat and relax. You need you Stranght and energy for later.   During my early labor I went to the movies with my husband we went to do a light grocery shop so we had lots of food in the house for when we got home and I slept in my midwife told me I could take some gravel and go to bed so I did and I'm so thankful that I rested because I really needed my energy for the 24 hours I didn't sleep after my labor started
