IVF - small for gestational age, miscarried one twin

Hi
I am 7w6d after IVF transfer of two embryos.  I am 33 years old and this was our first IVF attempt.  We had five other embryos that were to be frozen, but they stopped growing and were not good enough to freeze.

At our 6w5d ultrasound, we had two yolk sacs and no heartbeats.  I had no bleeding or cramping or anything following that ultrasound.  We went in for another ultrasound at 7w5d and one embryo was gone and the other has a heartbeat but is measuring a week behind.  I was told we have a "guarded prognosis."  Needless to say, we were overwhelmed and surprised.

So I apparently miscarried one twin and my remaining one is measuring a week behind, so we are less than optimistic, particularly after the tone of our doc.  He was not encouraging and said increased risk of miscarriage and that genetic/developmental issues could occur but it's obviously way too early to check for any of that.

Just wondering how "normal" this is.  Not sure if there are percentages of success for a situation like this? Any thoughts or suggestions for questions to ask at our next ultrasound at 8w5d.

Exhausted, scared and frustrated
Thanks

The practices and statistics for IVF is beyond my scope of experience or knowledge but I did have a pregnancy where the embryo was a week behind in gestation from what I thought it should be and There was no detectable heartbeat until my next appointment which was a week later (I was 9 weeks with the first heartbeat). My OB said that it was only the 2nd time he had seen that in his 20 years of practice.... I feel like in the first 12 weeks of any pregnancy, all you can do is wait and hope because it is a dangerous and unstable time for the pregnancy. I hope everything works out for you. Just rest, relax, put your feet up and drink lots of water.  :)
