The internet and Skype are wonderful! My family lives clear on the other side of the country from me.But with my tablet and Skype I was able to have both "present" to watch my 20week ultrasound and gender reveal! I plan to do the same during delivery as well, and as far as a baby shower I also registered and have the gifts sent to me.

I am from Spain but live in the US, I just take with my mom almost daily and send her pictures. She is also planning to come and stay with me from two weeks before my due date, for the three months she will be allowed to stay in the country without asking for a special Visa. My father will come too, and parents in law, but only for a couple of weeks, to meet their first grandchild. Then, I imagine we will Skype often and create a dropbox folder so we can share pictures of the baby. It wil be hard not to have my family close to me when the baby is growing,  but we will make it work.

I've lived out of state from my family the last pregnancy and this one. My family just requests that I make a registry and they but online and ship straight to my house with this one. We have most of the big things though so I just register for little things like towels, sleepers, etc. My parents usually fly in a week after the baby is born to visit.
