Membrane Sweep

So I'm 38 weeks pregnant and I had a Dr's appointment this afternoon and to my surprise my Dr did a membrane sweep to my cervix. I didn't expect that all and it hurt a little. Will the sweep cause me to go in labor early??

Ah...I see, I had not realized how common it was til being on this app, it seems like everyone has it done.
And I had never known anyone personally to have had it done. I had just heard about it, not really knowing what if was for.

Well they asked me if I wanted it done; I was 2cm and past my due date she said it might help jump start contractions. Thats why I got it done

What is the point of a membrane sweep? I've had two previous pregnancies and never had one, my first daughter was born naturally on her due date, and same with my second at 39weeks.
