Tooth extraction...

I have a cracked tooth that needs work, I've been putting off a root canal/extraction for about 5mos.now. (I know really bad) the tooth is starting to bother me again, & I don't want to risk a big infection during pregnancy. I'm 21 wks tomorrow,  and have heard it's best to get dental work done now- during your 2nd trimester. I have MAJOR anxiety when it comes to dentists-- they gave me valium for the procedure but that was Prior to me becoming pregnant. Anyone ever had to have major work like this done during pregnancy?  I'm planning on going through with the extraction on Monday, though I'm not crazy about the dentist who'd do it. My only other option is to wait it out until I have dental coverage after the 1st of the year. Advice on novicane during pregnancy, anything will help! Just want what's best for my baby! Very nervous!

There are natural things for pain. Clove essential oil is wonders on that.

I had a root canal during my first trimester. I had planned on waiting until the second trimester, but it became really infected overnight and was swelling a lot from puss. The endondontist made sure to double layer my belly when taking x-rays and she used a different numbing medication since I was pregnant. I also didn't take any antibiotics, but I didn't need any.

If it's not too bad, you might as well wait until the new year. Root canals are really expensive without insurance. I didn't have dental insurance either and it cost me around $2,000. :(

I have had 6 teeth extracted already and five fillings. Waiting on two root canals. All they have given me each time are the shots in the mouth. No valuims or anything and just.told me to take tylenol before the numbing wears off....

I dont remember... I think I took antibiotics after but its been awhile so hard to remember for sure

I'm 36 weeks and just had a tooth pulled on tuesday... All I need was letter from my ob that said it was ok... I have really bad anxiety and I didn't take anything when I went and I hate the dentist... I say get it done and make sure there's no infection it can spread to baby

I had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled in my second trimester. They don't use the same stuff as they would on a person thats not pregnant. I didnt really have much pain after they were pulled out, just a little bit harder to find things to eat. Ended up eating soup for three days.

I had wisdom teeth pulled during my last pregnancy. My doctor wasnt crazy about the idea but since they were bothering me so bad he approved it. They just numbed my mouth and pulled them both for me. It hurt im not going to lie and I couldnt really take anything for the pain but it was worth it and I felt so much better after about a week.

Thanks ladies. My Ob & dentist have cleared it. I just know tooth decay is worse during pregnancy,  or else I'd probably wait till after the baby comes!

With my last son I needed a tooth pulled and they wouldn't touch me until after birth!!! With this pregnancy I had to get a note from the Dr saying I could have anesthesia and that was for a filling..

The biggest concern with an infection in a tooth, as you said is an abcess. It really depends on how bad the tooth is..you may be able to keep it clean by irrigating it etc to prevent an abcess and wait to have a root canal. I'd talk to the dentist and ask their opinion...but if the pain in more than you can bare, maybe extraction would be best. I don't know what the risks of meds are though, sorry.
